This 1954 Austin-Healey 100 BN1 Roadster was acquired by the previous owner’s grandfather in the mid-1950s, and went to his father in the 1990s, and to him in the late 2000s. The previous owner began to refurbish the car, including purchasing a new Kilmartin frame and other parts, and the seller acquired the car as an unfinished project in 2018. Work over the last year has included a repaint, overhauls of the 2.6L inline-four and 3-speed transmission with overdrive, and more as detailed below. This Austin-Healey is offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate and a clean North Carolina title in the seller’s name.

The seller reports that the bodywork was sandblasted prior to priming and painting with two-stage black urethane. The car retains a factory adjustable-rake windscreen, and a new black convertible top and tonneau cover are shown in the gallery. The seller notes that the chrome grille surround, windshield frame, and windshield brackets show scratching and evidence of over-polishing.

A set of chrome 48-spoke wire wheels are fitted. Per the seller, the brake system has been serviced with new wheel cylinders, linings, and lines. The seller also serviced the rear end with new seals and outer bearings, and replaced the front wheel bearings and seals.

The cabin features low-back seats upholstered in off-white leather, and the footwells are lined with contrasting black carpets. Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, 6k-rpm tachometer, a combination oil pressure and water temperature gauge, and a fuel gauge. Just under 800 miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer, which was reset during the refurbishment. Total mileage is unknown.

The numbers-matching 2.6L inline-four received a new water pump, piston rings, and valves, as well as new crank, camshaft, and rod bearings. A stainless steel exhaust system has been fitted, and the dual carburetors were rebuilt. An electric fan has also been added. Most of the engine work was performed by the seller, save for machining and the installation of hardened valve seats. The 3-speed manual transmission features an overdrive unit operable in the top two gears. New first and reverse gears were installed, along with new seals.

Engine number 1B205644 corresponds to the engine number listed on the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate.

The original chassis was replaced with a new item made by Kilmartin in Australia, and photos of the frame and bodywork prior to re-assembly are provided in the gallery below. Per the manufacturer, Kilmartin’s frames use a greater wall thickness than a factory Healey frame for additional strength, and this frame is equipped with optional adjustable shock mounts.

The included British Motor Industry Heritage certificate states the car was built for North American export finished in black over off-white, and lists the original serial numbers and factory equipment.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
