Auction description
This 1954 Austin-Healey 100 BN1 roadster was reportedly sold new in California, where it remained until being relocated in 2008 to the East Coast. It was purchased in 2009 by the seller, who claims to be the fourth owner. It is powered by a rebuilt 2,660cc inline-four paired with a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive and is finished in Old English White and red over a red interior. The hood, trunk, and dashboard were repainted during the seller’s ownership, which also included installation of a new rear main seal, new pistons, a reground camshaft, a new aluminum cylinder head, and a competition-style oil pan. This BN1 is now offered with two tonneau covers, a car cover, a service manual, Austin-Healey gear, a tool kit, and transferable New York registration listing it as a 1955 model.
The car received a refurbishment in the early 1980s that reportedly included stripping the body, replacing rusted panels with new sheetmetal, and a repaint in Old English White and red. The hood and trunk lid were refinished under current ownership, and spidering is noted on the trunk.
Knock-off 15″ wire wheels wear Michelin XZX tires, and a spare is included in the sale. The exterior features a sliding windshield, a 20-louver hood with a leather strap, side-exit exhaust, and a black tonneau cover. A red tonneau cover is also included in the sale.
The interior features red upholstery with white piping, red door panels, and red carpets. A 100M Le Mans Registry plaque is affixed to the dashboard ahead of the passenger seat.
The body-color dashboard was repainted during the seller’s ownership and is fronted by a wood-rimmed steering wheel. The five-digit odometer shows 26k miles, approximately 1k of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.
The 2,660cc inline-four was reportedly rebuilt during the seller’s ownership, with work including machining and re-sleeving the block along with fitting new pistons, a reground camshaft, reground tappets, a new rear main seal, a new aluminum cylinder head, a competition-style oil pan, Pertronix ignition, and a new fuel line. The seller reports that the car has been converted to a 12-volt electrical system. Shifting is through a three-speed manual transmission with electric overdrive.
The engine stamping 1B214336 shown above matches that listed on the data plate on the passenger-side kick panel as well as on the stamping on the airbox.
A replacement crossmember was installed during the 1980s refurbishment, as the factory unit is said to have sustained damage from a jack.
A service manual, a tool kit with the Tecalemit grease gun fitting for the steering box, a knock-off spinner tool, and a car cover are included in the sale along with an Austin-Healey racing jacket, cooler, and blanket. The seller reports that the car has seen track time at Watkins Glen and has participated in the Keene Mountain Hill Climb reunion.
