Car was at auction in '10

Auction description:
1956 Austin-Healey 100/4 BN2 Le Mans
Chassis No. BN2-L/228078
Engine No. 1B/228078M
$80,000 - $110,000
Without Reserve

Constructed on August 23, 1955, this desirable Austin-Healey 100/4 BN2 was originally shipped from the Healey works to Hambro Trading Inc. Shortly after, the sporting Healey was acquired by its first owner, William Weaver, an engineer from Fairchild, Georgia.

A favorite mount of weekend racers and budding enthusiasts, the capable 100 was quickly put to use and various plaques were mounted to the dashboard to attest to the events in which Mr. Weaver participated during the early 1960s.

Throughout his ownership, the meticulous engineer maintained his prized sports car and kept a spiral-bound notebook in which he noted maintenance performed. Amazingly, the notebook tracks his entire history with the car from the first service at 500 miles until the final entry at 51,400 miles, when he installed new points and plugs.

After Mr. Weaver’s passing, Mrs. Weaver registered it in her name before asking a friend to help her find a new home for the car. In 2007, the present owner, an enthusiast with a passion for British sports cars, came across the well-preserved Healey.

Two years later, the car underwent a comprehensive overhaul that included rebuilding the original engine with a new crank, rods, pistons and aluminum head. At the time, all moving parts were balanced and, for good measure, the Healey received a new clutch and exhaust system. For outstanding performance on today’s highways, the differential was rebuilt with high 3.66 gearing, the distributor was equipped with Pertronix ignition, front disc brakes were fitted and the car was equipped with a new electronic fuel pump.

In addition, renowned Austin-Healey specialist Fourintune Garage rebuilt the overdrive unit, British Wiring provided a new cloth wiring harness, Apple Hydraulics restored the shock absorbers, MOMA Manufacturing reconstructed the gauges, Valley Plating addressed the chrome and Tim Marinos performed show-quality paintwork in the original Old English White with Carmine Red trim. Having been pampered for so many years by its first owner, the original upholstery was in lovely condition and was retained for its delightful patina and character. Adding to its already impressive appearance are period aircraft-style seat belts, proper Lucas lamps and a sought-after Derrington steering wheel.

Although it is not known precisely when this Healey was converted with the famed Le Mans modification kit, it is best described today as a “dealer M.” Thanks to its many Le Mans features, this car has been registered with the 100 M Le Mans Car Registry as a post-production converted example.

The current owner reports that the Healey is mechanically sound, a statement confirmed by completion of the four-day “Ten Gallon Tour” through Texas Hill Country in April 2010.

Beyond tours, its fine condition and dramatic appearance make it perfect for shows and concours. As recently as September 2010, it was displayed at the inaugural Santa Fe Concours where it garnered the Green Ribbon for Tour Participation.

Accompanying this car is a BMI Heritage Certificate and a Certificate of Membership from the Austin-Healey 100 M Le Mans Car Registry, as well as the owner’s service manual, operating handbook, tool kit, grease gun, jack, side curtains, top, and the original front drum brakes.

A lovely example of one of the finest British sports cars of the 1950s, this exceptional Healey is deserving of serious consideration for its event eligibility, driving character, timeless appearance and wonderful history.

This 1956 Austin-Healey 100 BN2 roadster was built on August 23, 1955, and was reportedly campaigned in driving events and club events by the original owner until 2007. It then underwent a multi-year refurbishment that was completed in 2009 and was recently acquired by the seller. The car is finished in white and red over red leather and powered by a numbers-matching 2,660cc inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission with electronic overdrive. Equipment includes a 100M Le Mans conversion kit, a limited-slip differential, a louvered hood secured with a leather tie-down strap, 15″ knockoff wire wheels, an adjustable-rake windshield, driving lights, a tonneau cover and side windows, a PerTronix electronic ignition system, and twin SU carburetors. Service in anticipation of the sale included balancing the front wheels, tuning the carburetors, and replacing the fuel pump, fuel-level sender, battery, voltage regulator, brake master cylinder, rear wheel cylinders, and rear brake shoes, This 100 BN2 roadster is now offered at no reserve in California with service records, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, a 100M Le Mans Registry certificate of membership, a tool kit, accessories, and a clean Montana title assigned to the seller’s LLC.

The body was refinished in Old English White and red during the refurbishment. Equipment includes a 100M-style adjustable windshield, a louvered hood with a leather tie-down, chrome bumpers, driving lights, and a fender-mounted side mirror. A red soft top and side curtains are included in the sale.

Painted 15″ wire wheels are mounted with chrome knockoffs and wear 165-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires that show 2010 date codes. The car is equipped with front disc and rear drum brakes as well as an independent front suspension. The front wheels were recently rebalanced, and the brake master cylinder, rear wheel cylinders, and rear shoes were replaced by the seller.

The cabin features red leather bucket seats along with matching carpets and door panels. Equipment includes a heater, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, lap belts, and an upholstered center armrest. Event badges from period events believed to be from the original owner are mounted on the transmission tunnel. Wear is noted on the seats and center console, the parking brake is in need of adjustment, and the cold air box and fresh air hoses are disconnected.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 3k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 2,660cc inline-four was fitted with 100M-style components during original ownership. They include larger SU carburetors and a higher-flow airbox with a Le Mans Modification Kit badge. Additional engine work and modifications reportedly included fitting an aluminum cylinder head, forged crankshaft, Carrillo rods, and 10:1 compression-ratio pistons. A PerTronix electronic ignition system was also added. Service during current ownership included tuning the carburetors, flushing the fuel tank, and replacing the fuel pump, fuel-level sender, battery, and voltage regulator. The seller notes the idle is “lopey” with the current camshaft.

Stamping 1B228078M matches the engine number listed on the BMIHT certificate.

A side-exit exhaust system is installed, and power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission, an overdrive unit, and a limited-slip differential.

Service records are included in the sale, along with a tool kit, literature, spare parts, and accessories.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists a build date of August 23, 1955, distribution Hambro Trading Company, and the original colors, serial numbers, and equipment. A 100M Le Mans Registry certificate will also accompany the car.
