Car to be at auction 9/16
thefinest.com/aspen-2016/1956-austin-healey-100m

Auction description:
Estimate: $185,000 - $200,000 USD
year: 1956
make: Austin-Healey
Model: 100M Le Mans Roadster
Chassis: BN2-L/229129
Body: 11002
Mileage: 69,094
Known factory-built 100M
One of only an 260 known examples
Listed in the "Worldwide 100M Le Mans Registry"
Four-Speed Manual Gearbox With Overdrive
69,094 Miles

This car bares the chassis number 229129, which is one of the chassis identified among the 640. A previous owner entered it into the "Worldwide 100M Le Mans Registry" where its chassis number categorizes it as an "F" for "factory" and it is eligible to attain the "FC" "factory confirmed" status via an interactive process with representatives of the registry.

Finished in complementing shades of light blue in and out, the restoration presents strongly in this example, which also includes its soft top. This desirable icon of the marque would show well on the concours field and perform on the track as it was design to do. Less than half of the original 100Ms made at the factory survive--giving the next owner of this car a rare opportunity to own an example of the most sought-after Austin-Healey model.

This 1955 Austin-Healey BN2 Roadster was built on October 26, 1955 and is one of 640 100M models produced. Finished in Healey Blue over a blue interior, the car was reportedly sold new in California and acquired by the current owner as a project in 1999. A restoration was carried out between 2014 and 2016 by High Mountain Classics of Berthoud, Colorado with assistance from marque specialist Roger Moment. Work included body repairs, a repaint, interior refreshment, replacing the fuel tank, and much more as outlined below. The numbers-matching 2,660cc inline-four was more recently rebuilt by the selling dealer, while shifting is through a four-speed manual gearbox. This 100M is now being offered on dealer consignment in Colorado with a tonneau cover, tool kit, restoration records, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, a 100M Registry Certificate of Membership, and a clean Florida title.

The body was repainted its factory shade of Healey Blue following rust remediation and body repairs, which included straightening the hood, fenders, and driver-side quarter panel. Further details of the work are documented.

Equipment includes a louvered hood with leather strap, fender-mounted mirrors, chrome bumpers with overriders, front fog lamps, and 15” wire wheels with two-eared spinners. A tonneau cover and side curtains are included in the sale.

Blue bucket seats are complimented by matching carpets and door panels, as well as a blue-painted dashboard.

A factory banjo-spoke steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation, including a 120-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 69k miles, though total mileage is unknown.

The 100M features larger carburetors than the standard BN2, as well as a cold-air box, a high-lift camshaft, and 8.1:1 compression pistons for a factory-rated output of 110 horsepower at 4,500 rpm. The original 2,660cc inline-six was rebuilt by the selling dealer from 2018 to 2019 with a new timing chain, camshaft, pistons, rings, lifters, and bearings. The carburetors were also overhauled.

A replacement fuel tank was installed during the restoration, and power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. According to the seller, the transmission pops out of first gear.

Engine stamping 1B229129M matches the number listed on the BMIHT certificate pictured below. The British Motor Industry Heritage states that the car is a “genuine factory-built 100 ‘M’ (or ‘Le Mans’) Model,” and lists the build date, original colors, and engine number.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
