Private Party or Dealer: Dealer

This 1957 Austin-Healey 100-6 is a 2+2 BN4 model that was previously owned by a local enthusiast in Northern California from 1993-2014, at which point it was donated to the Blackhawk Museum in Blackhawk, California. It remained under museum ownership for a number of years before it was acquired by the selling dealer. The car reportedly received a cosmetic and mechanical restoration in the early 1990s, including a repaint in its current Colorado Red. Power is provided by a 2.6L inline-six that runs through a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and an oil change is noted as being recently completed. The car is now offered by the selling dealer with a clean California title.

The seller believes that this car was repainted Colorado Red circa 1991/1992. This particular model is a BN-4 example that features 2+2 style seating as shown in photos.

Both a black soft top and a black tonneau cover are present, with one photo of the top up visible in the gallery. The wire wheels have slight discoloration present and are currently mounted with a set of Michelin tires.

The interior is trimmed in black vinyl with white piping on the seat edges and seams. Sun fading is visible on the transmission tunnel carpet, and a pair of rubber floor mats are present in both front foot wells.

A banjo-style steering wheel is present along with controls for the heater on the center of the dash. Instrumentation includes a set of Smiths gauges, with approximately 67,600 miles shown on the odometer. True mileage is unknown.

Power is provided by a 2.6L inline-six that runs to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The seller believes that the engine was rebuilt during the restoration in the early 1990s, with records unavailable. An oil change was recently completed.

Car to be at auction 8/19

Auction description:

Lot F79 Monterey 2019 Aug 15-17

VIN/Serial BN4L040672

Estimate $50,000 - $60,000

Highlights

British Motor Heritage Trust Certificate

Older restoration completed by Healey Motor Works in Santa Barbara, California

Matching numbers 2,639cc inline 6-cylinder engine

102 HP and 142 ft/lbs of torque

Twin SU carburetors

4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive

Borg and Beck single dry plate clutch

Hypoid bevel rear axle

Girling hydraulic drum brakes

Finished in Colorado Red with Black interior and top

Laminated windscreen

Very rare cigarette lighter

Heater

Wire wheels

This 1957 example features the welcome optional Laycock overdrive on third and fourth gears for relaxed high-speed touring. An unusual feature is the rare cigarette lighter. The overall appearance is pleasingly standard with painted wire wheels and a proper plastic-rimmed banjo-strung steering wheel, rather than cliché wood aftermarket affair. Among the many highlights for the 100-6 was the time standard-bodied cars took the Manufacturers Team Prize at Sebring in 1958, as well as an epic 10,000-mile four-day record run averaging 97 MPH at Montlhéry, France. Those very same virtues that Donald Healey espoused all those years ago apply just as much today, for the brawny Healey delivers real performance in a no-nonsense package that is easier to own than many rivals.

Lot #88666

This 1957 Austin-Healey 100-6 four-seat BN4 roadster is said to have been refurbished at Healey Motor Works of Santa Barbara, California, under previous ownership and was acquired by the selling dealer in December 2021. It is finished in red over black leather and powered by a 2.6-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Equipment includes 15″ wire wheels, a black soft top, fender-mounted mirrors, chrome bumpers with overriders, and dual SU carburetors. This BN4 is now offered by the selling dealer in Missouri with a California title.

The selling dealer notes that the car was finished from the factory in Colorado Red and refinished during the refurbishment. Features include a black soft top, chrome bumpers and trim, driving lights, dual fender-mounted mirrors, and twin exhaust outlets.

Silver 15″ wire wheels are wrapped in 185-width Michelin XZX tires. Braking is handled by drums at all four corners.

The four-seat cabin features black leather upholstery with white piping. Equipment includes a cigarette lighter, a passenger grab handle, and a heater. According to the seller, the seats were repaired and the carpets cleaned in preparation for sale. Wear on the upholstery is visible.

The three-spoke banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation that includes a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 68k miles, approximately 200 of which were added by the selling dealer.

The 2.6-liter inline-six features dual SU carburetors and sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive.

The California title is listed as a duplicate.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
