As the accompanying Heritage Certificate confirms, this BN4 was built in December 1958 and is a 'matching numbers' UK market car that was first registered in Worcestershire later that same month. According to the V5C it had just two owners from new (both from the same family) until July 2012 when the vendor acquired the car at which point it had been in storage for a number of years.

He immediately set about a thorough recommissioning process with many invoices on file to document all the work that has been done and the parts replaced. This has included: new timing chain and tensioner; new rocker gaskets; new engine and gearbox mountings; complete new clutch kit; carburettors overhauled; full brake system overhaul including new front discs and calipers; full suspension overhaul including reconditioned shock absorbers all round and new rear springs; reconditioned king pins; steering box overhaul; new stainless steel exhaust; speedo recalibrated; new headlamps and chrome surrounds; new tyres all round; new Perspex sidescreens; Evans waterless coolant; battery cut-off switch fitted.

Since the work was completed the car has covered around 1,000 trouble-free miles and is said to run and drive well with bags of performance. Cosmetically the car is very much 'as found' so it is no show queen but it has plenty of character and would be an ideal daily driver with no need to worry about B-road hedge-brushing and car park dings. A proper enthusiast's car in other words, and all the better for it!

The icing on the cake is the nice original Worcestershire number plate which is transferable and no doubt has a value of its own - not that we condone this sort of thing, of course. It also comes with an owner's handbook and parts catalogue plus a veritable library of books on the Healey marque which will provide plenty of bedside reading. What's not to like?

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
