Auction description:
1964 Austin Healey BJ8
Colour Blue
Odometer 12 Miles
Engine size 2912
Town Carmarthenshire
Auction DetailsSeller Type Private
Location Wales [previously York, Pennsylvania]
Country United Kingdom
Professional restoration, as close to brand new as you can get without a time machine
Ice blue/old English white two-tone colour
Beautiful blue original trim
Option to change to RHD available
The History and Paperwork
Hugely comprehensive paperwork file
All receipts for parts retained
Curated photo album of the restoration process
Heritage document proving provenance
This car was actually a customer car who had to unfortunately give up the car for personal reasons, this is a big reason for why the paperwork file is so full.
The current owner purchased the car from the client and continued with the restoration to sell the car on. The client’s loss can now be your gain as the car is ready to go after the restoration process which means no waiting or sourcing parts, very convenient.
The car is an import from Pennsylvania hence the LHD configuration, it was decided by the client to keep this layout as the car would be used for trans-European trips however should the winning bidder prefer the wheel on the correct side of the car then the owner has agreed to complete the work if the buyer sources the parts.
The Interior
Beautiful blue original trim to compliment the exterior colour
Wood finished dashboard complete with reset gauges
Wonderful wood rimmed steering wheel
The interior is immaculate, nothing bad to say about it, as you’d expect from a car having recently had a completed restoration, everything is present and in order.
The seats are trimmed in a darker shade of blue than the exterior with a clear piping that accentuates the shape of the seats structure.
The rear seating area folds down to become a luggage compartment and the door cards, carpets and hood lining all add up to create a stunning reincarnation of the car.
The Exterior
From British racing green to Ice blue/Old English white
All metal work professionally restored and reinstated
Perfectly finished
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the exterior of the car is near perfect.
I’m sure you’d expect nothing less from a professional restoration, but the car was a pleasure to behold with us not wanting to touch it for fear of putting a fingerprint on the freshly polished paintwork.
The Healey is such a tactile car however that it responds wonderfully to a commanding hand and even little things such as the door’s closing feels like it might have done in 1964.
The wire wheels are brand new and if you look through the photo gallery, you’ll see that they come with a guarantee from the manufacturer, the tyres as well are new period designed items with plenty of tread and miles left in them.
Elsewhere on the exterior the fabric roof is brand new and is a darker shade than the body, matching the interior trim colour, a nice touch to bring the colour scheme together.
All brightwork and trim pieces on the exterior of the car are fully re-chromed and shine in the sunlight highlighting the lines of the car.
The exterior then is one of the many highlights to the car and has been completed to a high standard.
The Mechanics
Fully rebuilt engine, gearbox and drivetrain
Brand new suspension
Brand new exhaust system
The mechanicals are a big part of the Healey and they certainly weren’t overlooked, the 3.0L straight six has been fully stripped, any parts needing it have been replaced and the unit has been rebuilt and repainted.
Underneath the bonnet the engine not only sounds fantastic but it looks it too with a coat of soft coloured green highlighted with the chrome rocker cover. As shown in the photo gallery the car has a brand-new wiring loom that looks fantastic in its wrapping and is sure to increase the reliability of the electronic system.
The car fired up eagerly and idled well whilst no unwanted noises could be heard from the drivetrain. The sports stainless steel exhaust put out a wonderful note that suited the aggressive road handling reputation the Austin Healey commands.
With Just 12 miles on the clock since restoration, it’s almost as if it has delivery miles and we’d imagine the new owner should resist temptation to open the taps fully until the engine has been bedded in, this is something that can be further discussed with the current owner however as they would be able to tell you more.
Interesting to note that the car had an adjustable steering column from the factory and it is still present in the car today, working as intended along with the rest of the systems in the car.
