This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was built in May 1964 and originally dispatched to San Francisco, California. Finished in Colorado Red over a black interior, the car was purchased by the seller’s brother in 1974 and was sold to family friends following his sudden passing in early 2000. It was then reacquired by the seller in 2018 following several years in storage, and subsequent recommissioning included installing a stainless-steel exhaust system, overhauling the brakes, rebuilding the carburetors, replacing the fuel tank and pump, and more. The vehicle was listed on BaT in September 2020 and is now being re-listed after having the harmonic balancer rebuilt. Power is supplied by a 2.9-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. This BJ8 is offered with assorted spare parts, service records, a BMIHT certificate, a set of keys with an Austin-Healey fob, black California license plates, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.
The car was reportedly repainted in its factory shade of Colorado Red in the 1980s, and a replacement Everflex vinyl black soft top was installed during current ownership. The car is equipped with vent windows and a dual-exit exhaust. The seller notes bubbling on the left rear fender, and finish cracks in the hood near the air scoop and one of the windshield washer nozzles. The pictured black California license plates were reportedly assigned to the car in 1965.
15″ wire wheels with two-eared knockoff spinners are wrapped in 185-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires installed in July 2018. Brakes and other mechanical components were refreshed in May 2018 at Sport & Specialty of Durand, Illinois.
The 2+2 interior is trimmed in black upholstery and features roll-up side windows, burl wood dash veneers, and red three-point Lifeline seatbelts with 1966 dates shown on the tags. The seller notes that the factory tube radio is operational but the volume is low.
A banjo-style steering wheel fronts factory instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and a five-digit odometer that displays approximately 5k miles; true mileage is unknown. LED dash lighting was installed by the seller, who notes that the speedometer and odometer are replacement items that were installed in 1974.
The 2.9-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors and a higher-lift camshaft than the previous C-series engine used in the BJ7 Mk II, producing 150 horsepower when new. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Refurbishment work performed in 2018 included rebuilding the carburetors, heater box, and radiator, as well as replacing the exhaust, fuel tank, clutch slave cylinder, and more as outlined on service invoices provided in the photo gallery below. The harmonic balancer was rebuilt and reinstalled in September 2020, as noted on an accompanying invoice from Vintage Sports Car Inc of Woodstock, Illinois.
Corrosion is present on areas of the underside, and additional photos are viewable in the gallery.
The car is currently titled by vehicle ID number 65HBJ8L26935, which incorporates the model year along with the chassis plate.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the car was built in May 1964 and shipped to San Francisco, California later that month. Factory colors and equipment are also detailed. Key number matches the number on the BMIHT certificate, and the key stamping.
