This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was acquired by its current owner in 1988 and refurbished from 1999-2001 with sheet metal replacement, a repaint in red, interior refreshment, and engine work as well as overhauls of the electrical system, suspension, brakes, and more. Power is from a numbers-matching 2.9-liter inline-six mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. A service in 2016 included adjusting the carburetors, replacing coolant hoses, fluid changes, and more, while an oil change was performed in January 2018. This BJ8 is offered on consignment by the selling dealer with a BMIHT certificate, receipts from 1999-2016, and a clean North Carolina title.

Originally Healey Blue according to the BMIHT certificate, the car was repainted in red during the 1999-2001 refurbishment. All four fenders are said to have been replaced and areas of rust were repaired on the front and rear floors, trunk, inner and outer rocker panels, right front outrigger, and door posts.

Brightwork was replated or replaced as needed, and a tan soft top was fitted along with a matching top cover. Chrome wire wheels are affixed with eared knock-off nuts and wear Falken tires installed in 2016, when the brake and clutch fluids were also changed.

The interior features front and rear seats trimmed in tan leather, replacement wood panels, roll-up windows, and a heater. A banjo-style wheel fronts Smiths gauges including a 5-digit odometer which displays just under 90k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The tachometer and trip meter are inoperable according to the selling dealer, and the heater control pull knob is not properly affixed. The electrical system has been converted to negative ground, and an older aftermarket radio is fitted ahead of the center-mounted shifter.

A spare wire wheel and tire are tied down with a brown leather strap in the trunk, which is also home to a knock-off mallet and jack.

The 2.9-liter inline-six features SU carburetors, which were tuned during a 2016 service conducted by The Flying Circus in Durham, North Carolina that also included distributor and brake work. A recent test reportedly showed compression of 160-175 psi with less than 5% leakdown and an oil change was performed in January 2018.

Power is routed through a center-shift 4-speed manual gearbox equipped with a Laycock overdrive. Engine stamping #29K-RU-H/6016 matches the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate.

This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was delivered new to Charleston, South Carolina and was kept by its previous owner in North Carolina for more than 30 years before it was acquired by the seller in a February 2019 BaT auction. The car was refurbished with a repaint in red over a refreshed tan interior from 1999 through 2001, at which point the braking and electrical systems reportedly were overhauled. The 2.9-liter inline-six sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, and in April 2019 the dual SU carburetors and timing were adjusted and Bilstein shocks were fitted. This BJ8 is now offered with records from 1999 onward, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment photos, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The car has been refinished in red, although the BMIHT certificate indicates that the car was initially delivered in Healey Blue. Body and paint work reportedly were performed from 1999 to 2001, at which point a tan soft top and a matching boot cover were fitted. The finish and exterior trim are shown in the photo gallery below, and the seller notes paint chips on the outer edge of the driver door.

Chrome 15″ wire wheels are mounted with two-ear knockoffs and Falken tires. In April 2019 the seller had the car inspected, and Bilstein shocks were installed with a special mounting kit.

The cockpit features bucket seats with tan leather upholstery and a matching console and door panels. Tan floor mats with rubber inserts are fitted over tan carpeting, and the door paneling as well as the heater control panel reportedly have been replaced.

The banjo-style steering wheel shows cracking on the center emblem and sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation. Per the seller, the speedometer has been rebuilt and the fuel-sending unit has been replaced. The odometer shows 90k miles, less than 300 of which have been added by the seller.

The 2.9-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors and was rated at 148 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox with a Laycock overdrive unit. The seller states that the timing and carburetors were adjusted in April 2019.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows a build date of April 1965 and indicates that the car was initially delivered to Charleston, South Carolina. Also listed are the chassis, engine, and body numbers as well as the factory color scheme of Healey Blue with a blue top over a blue interior.

A number of in-progress photos captured during the refurbishment will accompany the car.
