This 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 is a left-hand-drive Mk III BJ8 model which was acquired by the seller in 2005 from its previous owner of 23 years. Power is from a 2,912cc inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and the car was refinished in its original British Racing Green over a black vinyl interior in the late 1980s. A new exhaust header, wheel bearings, splined hubs, and Dayton 60-spoke painted wire wheels were installed under current ownership along with rebuilt Armstrong lever shocks. This BJ8 is offered with factory literature, a car cover, 20 years of service records, tools, and a clean Iowa title in the seller’s name.

The car was refinished in British Racing Green under previous ownership between 1989 and 1991 according to the seller, and is fitted with a black convertible soft top which is shown both lowered and raised. A tonneau cover is included in the sale, as is a matching boot for use when the top is stowed. The passenger door handle is described as sporadically inoperative, and light pitting can be seen on the chrome windshield trim.

Painted Dayton 60-spoke wire wheels with chrome knock-off nuts were installed under current ownership and wear Vredestein Sprint ST 70 tires, with a spare located in the trunk. The car is equipped with front disc brakes, and new wheel bearings and splined hubs were fitted during the seller’s ownership. The wheels and rear brake drums were balanced and the tires were shaved by Hendrix Wire Wheel of Greensboro, North Carolina.

The black interior features stock vinyl-upholstered front bucket seats and individual rear cushions with perforated center sections. Matching carpets are protected by rubber mats in the front footwells. Tears in both door panels and the driver’s seat cushion, a burn mark on the driver’s seat, and other interior imperfections are shown.

A leather-wrapped banjo steering wheel rests in front of a wood-paneled dash housing a BMC AM radio and controls for the optional heater. Smiths gauges include a tachometer and a five-digit odometer reading 89k miles, with 8,500 added during the seller’s 14 years with the car. Actual mileage is unknown. An extended rearview mirror stem has replaced the stock version, which is included in the sale. The fuel gauge occasionally requires a tap to function, and the bottom trunk liner piece is missing.

The 2,912cc C-Series inline-six was refurbished and fitted with an Isky camshaft approximately 10k miles ago in the late 1990s according to records included with the sale. The seller added a PerTronix electronic ignition setup and Flamethrower coil as well as replacing the outer exhaust header pipe, and notes that an uninstalled second new header pipe will also be included. An Optima Redtop battery was installed in late August 2019 in preparation for the sale.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with a Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit. Annual engine oil changes have reportedly been performed under current ownership, while the transmission fluid was changed in 2008. Intermittent scuttle shake is described when driving between 55 and 60 mph.

The sale includes service receipts said to date from the last 20 years as well as a jack, a lead knock-off hammer, other tools, spare parts, and a driver’s handbook.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
