The Interior

Retrimmed in green leather

Stylishly designed dashboard

Moto-Lita steering wheel

Continuing the sleek curves of the 100’s body, the interior is suitably well designed. The dashboard features a swooping curve and the bucket seats are minimal yet well padded.

The upholstery has been retrimmed in leather in its original green colour. This covers the seats, the transmission tunnel, and the spare wheel well where it projects into the passenger compartment — a neat use of space.

Stepping into the car, the driver is presented with a large wooden Moto-Lita steering wheel in front of the beautifully minimalist dashboard, which is stocked with just the right number of gauges and switches — including that all-important overdrive switch. The bold numerals on the Smiths instruments complement the tactile pull switches very well.

The doors are upholstered in matching green leather and feature leather latch pulls in place of handles, as well as spacious storage wells. And the carpeting is beautifully finished and presented in great condition throughout. Behind the seats, textured vinyl covers the small luggage area, and this material is continued into the boot, which is very generously proportioned for a sports car of the 1950s .

There is a full-size spare wire wheel, secured down with a buckled leather strap. And we particularly like the fact that the fuel filler neck is positioned just inside the boot, keeping the car’s exterior free from any sort of clutter.

The Exterior

Beautifully clean lines

Excellent ‘Spruce Green’ paintwork

Superbly clean underneath

The sleek design of the Austin-Healey 100 makes it a truly beautiful car to behold. The first thing you notice is the fold-flat windscreen, which gives the car the most rakish look when lowered. The lack of external door handles adds to the car’s sporting look, along with the concealed fuel filler cap.

Finished in smart Spruce Green, this Healey’s paint appears to be in excellent condition throughout, with barely a blemish to be found. It has clearly been well looked after since the car’s restoration a few years ago. The chrome plating on the bumpers and trim is similarly well preserved and exhibits a deep shine.

Underneath, the car appears to be in exceptionally good condition, with no evidence of damage or corrosion to be seen. The Spruce Green paint looks to be well preserved and even the exposed bolt heads are still bright and clean.

The car runs on wire wheels, which have been painted silver and look to be in very clean condition. They are shod with tyres which retain good tread. And above, there is a vinyl hood and removable sidescreens to provide weather protection, along with a tonneau cover. The sidescreens come in their own fitted storage pouch, and both feature flaps for access to the internal door latches from outside.

The Mechanics

Beautifully presented engine compartment

Said to drive perfectly

Three-speed transmission — with overdrive on second and third

The Austin-Healey 100 was fitted with a 2,660cc four-cylinder engine, the same as the Austin A90 Atlantic. This was coupled to a three-speed transmission, which also featured overdrive on second and third gears.

Having been restored, this Healey is reported to drive perfectly, with no reported issues or faults. The vendor tells us that the car has been carefully maintained, and there are invoices on file for parts and servicing.

Lifting the bonnet reveals a smart engine bay with the twin carburettors proudly on display along with attractive details such as the ornately designed heater shutoff tap. Underneath, the running gear is exceptionally clean, with evidence of extensive overhaul work having been completed.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
