This 1954 Austin-Healey 100 BN1 roadster is said to have been modified in California by an aerospace engineer beginning around 1976 through the seller’s acquisition of the car in 2007. The vehicle has been modified with a Chevrolet 350ci V8, which is linked to a Muncie four-speed manual transmission. Finished in white over red upholstery, the car is equipped with Radir 15″ wheels, an Edelbrock 750cfm carburetor, an Edelbrock intake manifold, a dual exhaust system, rack-and-pinion steering, front disc brakes, an engine-turned dashboard, red carpeting, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, and Stewart-Warner gauges. This modified Austin-Healey is now offered with recent service records, a tonneau cover, and a California title in the seller’s name.
The Chevrolet 350ci V8 was fitted prior to 2000 under prior ownership along with a custom aluminum firewall, the seller tells us. An Edelbrock 750cfm carburetor with electric choke is bolted to an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold, and the engine is also complemented by an aftermarket camshaft, finned rocker covers, tubular exhaust headers, and an auxiliary electric cooling fan. The following work has been performed in recent years:
2020
Install electric fuel pump
Replace fuel filters and fuel hose
Flush fuel tank
Replace radiator hoses
Replace ignition coil
2021
Refurbish radiator
Install coolant-overflow tank
Replace alternator
Replace starter
Replace battery
Install battery kill switch
The car has been refinished in white and features an adjustable windshield, a driver-side mirror, dual exhaust outlets, blue California license plates, and chrome bumpers with overriders. A red tonneau cover is included in the sale, although a convertible top is not.
Radir 15″ wheels are mounted with 185/65 Dunlop SP Sport A2 tires. Braking is provided by front discs and rear drums, and rack-and-pinion steering has been adapted. The brake master cylinder, hoses, front rotors, wheel hubs, and tie-rod ends were replaced in 2020.
The bucket seats are trimmed in red upholstery. Interior appointments include red carpeting, an engine-turned dashboard fascia, lap belts, a push-button starter, and a passenger grab handle. A Don Garlits Hi-Performance Engines plaque is affixed to the dashboard. A hand-formed aluminum transmission cover features the Austin-Healey lightning-bolt motif.
The wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel fronts Stewart-Warner instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 6k miles, less than 1k of which were added under current ownership.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Muncie M21 four-speed close-ratio manual gearbox.
The “Car No.” cited on the plaque is BNIL161018, which resembles the BN1L161018 sequence that could have been a factory-issued chassis number for an Austin-Healey BN1. The car is titled under the “Engine No.” listed on the plaque above—1B215090—but with an “MA” suffix to read 1B215090MA. The California title is noted to be a Duplicate document.
