I purchased this car 2-7-1990 from a gentleman's estate who bought it new. 1955 Austin Healey 100/4. ALL matching original numbers. This was a special order car that the archivist Anders Ditlev Clausager of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate (dated 2nd January 1992) states on the document that the car was probably sent to Donald Healey Motor Company Limited in Warwick after production to have the louvered hood fitted, as the louvered hood was not an option, so the original owner had some special pull to get this done. The certificate states that the car was built on 7 July 1955 and dispatched to the USA through Donald Healey Motor Company Ltd. The original equipment was a louvered hood, heater and laminated windscreen. The original owner in Florida was refreshing the car in 1989 when he passed away and couldn't complete the work. An extremely solid car, it was taken down to bare metal and painted in Old English White polyurethane enamel with Zinc Chromate used as the primer. Engine, transmission, clutch and overdrive were completely rebuilt at that time so there are no miles on these rebuilds. Everything was replaced or rebuilt. Have photos of the inside of the engine showing new parts - pistons, etc. I have had, and still have, many Healeys and I prefer the 100/4's so this one was put in my dry basement where it has been for the past 35 years. It has been my favorite Healey because of it's solid nature and past one owner special history. It runs and drives better than any of the Healeys I have owned or driven. I never had any intention of selling any of my cars but time has run out for me so this car was recently removed over the last few months and thoroughly refreshed to get it in roadworthy condition for sale. Don't want to sell any of my cars, especially this one but my children won't know what to do with them after I croak. The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and many receipts go with the car.
PAINT:
Stripped down to bare metal and professionally painted by commission in Old English White using the period tough urethane enamel paint with Zinc Chromate as the primer. Using top quality paint and labor still shows well with the exception of minor scratches, chips, cracks, touch up. Yes, 35 years old but is in very good driver quality condition. Perfect patina. All else, chrome, bumpers, grille, etc are original and in very good condition. Extremely solid car with no rust issues evident
INTERIOR:
Black interior, black carpet with insulation installed over solid floors. Transmission tunnel was also insulated underneath. Seats are still in good usable condition. New seat belts. New top. All original gauges working gauges. New Pilkington windshield and seals. Everything works on the car with the exception of the turn signals. Trunk has a carpeted spare tire holder and carpeted wood removable floor over the fuel tank. Gas tank is sealed. Original side curtains are there but need restoration.
ENGINE:
Engine was professionally rebuilt thru original owner. New pistons, valves, guides, bearings, seals, gaskets, etc. No miles on the rebuild. Rebuilt generator, voltage regulator, carbs, fuel pump. Original parts-nothing Chinese. New upgraded German water pump, 170 degree thermostat, hot climate radiator fan, new radiator hoses, battery, flushed radiator, boiled/sealed gas tank. Runs 170 in 100 degree weather. Quiet, responsive, no smoke or noises. Have internal engine photos showing new pistons.
Original matching numbers engine. Most everything on, in and attached to engine has been rebuilt - There are no miles on any of this work. (Same with transmission and overdrive) A silent, strong and smooth running engine having no issues. No Chinese junk parts. Compression is straight 138 for all cylinders - taken cold on a new engine - will rise significantly after rings are seated. New factory "Harmo" exhaust system installed in 1989. Harmo stickers still on the muffler. Never used - like new.
TRANSMISSION, OVERDRIVE:
Transmission has been completely professionally overhauled thru the past owner at the same time the engine was rebuilt. He also had the rebuilder remove the first gear blanking plate, so it has 4 speeds forward instead of 3 - Fine if you are going up Pikes Peak - Just start out using second. New proper cloth bound overdrive wiring harness installed - original was missing when car purchased. New OD solenoid - orig was weak. OD ratio is the preferred 28%. Trans and overdrive work excellent. Smooth
WHEELS, TIRES:
Media blasted and painted original 48 spoke wheels. Tires are new Thunderer Mach 1 165/80/R15, made in Thailand. Was skeptical buying these tires initially but have used them on most of my Healeys, Triumphs, MG's and Jaguars and have been very pleased with them - well built with no balancing issues....all tires from China however are junk. A couple of spokes are missing on one wheel. Spare wheel is good, spare is an old winter tire but it fits in the spare tire cover - new ones are too large.
BRAKES:
Brakes have been completely rebuilt. New master cylinder, wheel cylinders (6), rubber brake lines, brake shoes. Nice hard pedal and stops easily and straight.
DASHBOARD:
All gauges are original and all work. Mileage shows 38792. I bought the car in 1990 with this mileage showing and have no reason to think the mileage is any different than what is shown but cannot guarantee it.
ASKING PRICE $47,000
