Fully restored rally veteran

Chassis BN1L227549

This 1955 Austin-Healey 100/4 BN1, chassis BN1L227549, has led a charmed life in the fast lane, first as a long-time race car participating in VSCCA and SVRA vintage races and later on rallies like the Colorado Grand and California Mille.

The previous owner purchased the Austin-Healey in 2010 through Automotive Restorations / Vintage Racing Services. Kent Bain's well-known and respected shop knew the car very well having supported it during its time on the vintage racing circuit.

After purchase, a great deal of time and money was spent to bring the car to its current specification, totaling more than $120,000 in receipts from Automotive Restorations / Vintage Racing Services. Among others, the prior owner did the following as part of the restoration in 2010 - 2012:

* Body was taken down to bare metal and painted Aston Martin Green with Old English White coves

* Engine was completely rebuilt

* Installation of custom made Dunlop knock-off wheels from Racemettle in England; original wire wheels are also present and painted Old English White

* Custom Mota-Lita steering wheel

* New leather seats from Heritage Upholstery in Cream with Green piping

* Brand new carpet set from Heritage Upholstery in Aston Green

* New convertible top and tonneau cover installation

* Installation of twin Lucas 7-inch Flamethrower driving lights mounted on Dennis Welch light brackets

* Installation of Dennis Welch front disc brake kit

* Uprated alternator, aluminum Cape Sport Radiator, accessory cooling fan

Post-restoration, chassis BN1L227549 has successfully participated in two Colorado Grand (2015, 2017) and two California Mille (2012, 2013) rallies, in addition to numerous events throughout New England.

While most Austin-Healeys offer spirited performance and enduring aesthetics, this 100/4 provides the added benefits of thoughtful modifications and a brilliant restoration. Combine these with a California Mille, Colorado Grand and Mille Miglia friendly build date of 1955 and this 100/4 is as well suited to the show circuit as it is for high-speed tours.

This 1955 Austin-Healey 100 BN1 roadster was completed on August 11, 1955, for delivery in Düsseldorf, Germany, and later made its way to the US, where it was refurbished by Automotive Restorations of Stratford, Connecticut, between 2011 and 2012. It participated in the California Mille and 2017 Colorado Grand and was purchased by the current owner in 2019. The car is powered by a 2.7-liter inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission. It is finished in Aston Green and Olde English White over cream leather with green piping, and features include a removable black soft top, Racemettle Dunlop-style knock-off wheels, a tonneau cover, Lucas driving lights, Dennis Welch front disc brakes, an aluminum radiator, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a folding windscreen, and bucket seats. This 100 is now offered on dealer consignment with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, service records, spare parts, a set of wire wheels, and a clean North Carolina title.

The car was stripped and received metal repairs in 2011 before it was repainted Aston Green and Olde English White. It features a removable black soft top, a tonneau cover, a louvered bonnet with a leather strap, an adjustable windshield, 7″ Lucas Flamethrower driving lights on Dennis Welch brackets, Colorado Grand and Mobil graphics, and a single exhaust outlet. Cosmetic blemishes are noted.

The Dunlop-style knock-off wheels were sourced from Racemettle in England and are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires measuring 165HR15. A Dennis Welch front disc brake kit has been added, while drums are retained at the rear.

Cream leather piped in green from Heritage Upholstery & Trim covers the two bucket seats, and interior appointments include Aston Green carpets over Dynamat sound deadening, a passenger grab handle, a wooden shift knob, lap belts, and door pockets.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 12k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 2.7-liter inline-four was rebuilt by Automotive Restorations in 2012. An uprated alternator has been added along with an aluminum radiator and an accessory cooling fan. The fuel pump was replaced in 2023, at which time the carburetors were rebuilt.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The clutch disc and pressure plate were replaced in 2019. Oil, transmission, and clutch fluid leaks are noted.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate lists the original build date, destination, and equipment.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
