Race car looks
This little Healey was built in 1958 and was immediately exported over to Seattle, America where it would spend the majority of its life. It was bought back into the UK in 2016 where it would soon become the subject of a major mechanical restoration. Things that have been overhauled or replaced include, the engine, carburettor overhaul, upgraded front disc brakes and the suspension. There have also been many new parts including aluminium fenders, sports side exhaust (which sounds excellent) and the more sports car looking aluminium fuel filler cap.
After all this work was complete the current owner picked it up and, in their ownership, they have recently overhauled the gearbox, only 115 miles ago. As a testament to the quality of the work completed the current owner will regularly take the car to shows to let the public see how well put together this car is.
The Paperwork
The amount of paperwork on this Healey is amazing, the receipts and other documents fill two fairly sized plastic folders. There are invoices to document the current ownership where there is one to show the recent £1,400 gearbox rebuild which is the major works that have been completed recently.
In the previous ownership is where you will find the majority of these receipts, there are many invoices for the same company, AH Spares, who appear to be Austin Healey parts specialists. When you tot up all of the receipts it comes to somewhere around £20,000 worth of parts which is crazy. Due to the amount of work evidenced by all of the receipts you can imagine that the car is pretty well built.
The Interior
The interior of this Austin is in good condition. Once you fold yourself inside the car the seats are fairly comfortable and finished in a lovely blue leather. Because of the age of the car there isn’t much to play with inside the car however thanks to the sports side exit exhaust you will be able to hear the lovely tone produced by the inline six.
This car does have the option to remove the hard-top to make it into an open cockpit which will allow you to enjoy all of the benefits of classic car top-down driving.
The Exterior
The Exterior of this Austin is, by admission of the current owner ‘average’ whilst the restorer has excellent skills when it comes to the mechanical side, they may have lacked skills on the aesthetic side.
With the replacement of the original wings to aluminium ones you can be sure that there aren’t any holes in them, The roof is also removable. The paint combination however works well the white and blue two tone looks very similar to some of the racing versions of the 100/6 and it has the white circle for you to place your race number in should the new owner want to do so.
The Mechanics
Thanks to the recent restoration the mechanics of this car are great. All of the receipts will point towards all of the work that has been completed to make this Healey mechanically sound. The straight six is coupled to a recently rebuilt 4 speed manual gearbox that also has an overdrive feature. It starts well and drives great for a car of its age. Getting it into first gear can sometimes involve a bit of man handling as there is no synchromesh but once in and away, the sound and feeling of classic motoring will overcome you.
