Finished in its factory colour scheme of ‘Colorado Red’ with black leather upholstery, this rare, original, RHD home-market example was the subject of a comprehensive 2003/4 restoration to near concours standard, since when the car has covered around 9,000 miles and had just one long-term owner.

The vendor, who is in the classic car trade and really knows his Austin Healeys, tells us that the chassis is reassuringly free of any signs of unsightly repairs or previous accident damage, and that it and the insides of the wheel-arches are painted (as they should be) in the same colour as the bodywork.

The car is believed to have been dry stored and unused for many years before being unearthed and subsequently restored by Graham Goodall, a well-known marque specialist.

Since the 2003/4 restoration, the car has spent long periods kept safe, warm and dry and adding very little to the odometer reading.

Subject to a recent and very thorough recommissioning, the car took part in the April 2026 Austin Healey Club ‘Drive It Day’, which saw her touring for over 100 entirely trouble-free miles around the home counties.

The vendor tells us that the engine pulls strongly and holds good oil pressure, and that the the gearbox is quiet and slick with overdrive operating as it should on the 3rd and 4th gears.

We have driven this splendid car and can attest to the veracity of those words.

We’d also add that the car feels properly screwed together, and the absence of too many extraneous rattles, squeaks or creaks supports our opinion that this is a machine with a great deal of mechanical and dynamic integrity.

Better still, the roadholding and grip are better than you might normally expect to find, even on a properly sorted and fettled Healey, and thanks for that must go in no small part to the presence of 5.5” chrome wire wheels shod in matching, high-quality rubber.

Exterior

As mentioned earlier, we’ve seen a lot of Healeys come and go through the portals of our Oxfordshire HQ - which is a couple of miles away from Abingdon, where this one was assembled at the BMC factory.

But we’ve never seen one with crisper, more consistent shut-lines and panel gaps than this fine Mk III Phase II.

It’s really very impressive, and far better than any 1964 British car has a right to be.

The bodywork is really very straight and true on this car and we failed to find any dinks, dents, ripples or other aberrations of note anywhere.

Overall, the paintwork is very well preserved too, and any indications that the paint is more than 20 years are few and far between.

The tailor-made black mohair hood is in excellent order, goes up and down with a minimum of fuss, and fits snugly. The tonneau cover for the hood is also very good.

Aside from the odd stone chip here and a light swirly scratch there, blemishes and flaws are generally more notable for their absence than their presence.

The only very minor exception to that rule we’ve noticed is a small spot of nascent bubbling atop the o/s/r wing just behind the driver’s door.

The chrome-work is very tidy throughout, including on the chromed wire wheels.

From what we can see, the badging, lights, lenses, and other exterior fixtures and fittings are all in broadly irreproachable condition.

Interior

The black leather upholstery is spot-on for such an unashamedly macho, old-school sportscar, and we’re happy to report that the seats, front and back, are in very decent condition, save for some wear to the outer bolsters on the driver’s seat and, to a lesser extent, on the front passenger’s seat.

The door cards look good to us, and the carpets and mats have held up well – as has the lining of the roof.

The rich and glossy veneers on the dashboard have stoically resisted all but the most negligible temptations to fade, crack or shed their lacquer, and they create a warm and inviting contrast to the otherwise black aesthetic of the interior.

There are a couple of dinks to the chrome trim to the left-hand side of the speaker grille on the centre console.

As far as we’re aware, all of the Smiths instruments and other knobs, switches, levers and buttons are fully functional and do what they’re supposed to do without hesitation, deviation or repetition.

The leather-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel is in fine fettle, as are the gear lever and handbrake.

The boot is as good of the rest of it. It contains a spare wire wheel, shod in Kumho Power Star rubber like the four road wheels.

Mechanical

The engine bay is notably clean and tidy, with everything in its right and proper place.

There are no leaks that we can see, and all pipes, cables, hoses and ancillaries appear to be present and correct.

The undersides of the car look, sound, solid and possessed of plenty of structural integrity.

Absolutely nothing we’ve seen has prompted us to frown, tut or otherwise question the car’s honesty or character.

History

The car comes with a BMIHT Certificate of Authenticity, from which we can see that it was supplied new by Bridge Clock Motors of Coventry, with factory fitted extras including wire wheels, overdrive, heater, adjustable steering column, laminated windscreen, ‘Road Speed’ tyres, and leather upholstery.

It also comes with its original buff logbook, a recent, clear HPI report, a V5C, and an invoice showing that it was the recipient of new slave and master clutch cylinders in April 2025.

The car’s MoT certificate has no advisories whatsoever and is valid until 1st April 2027.
