Austin Healeys are coveted amongst British Automobile collectors, especially the 3000 series cars. Longer and heavier than the previous model 100 series cars, the 3000 became known as the "Big Healey". As a bigger car, it was slightly heavier, but featured more room for passengers, and a six-cylinder engine. Austin was phasing out the 4-cylinder, so the next best option was an inline-6. Donald Healey took part in testing the six-cylinder engine, even personally running a car powered by the six-cylinder at Bonneville to 204mph. The 3000 saw a few styling changes to the previous 100-series cars, though it kept the same flowing lines and front styling that includes a grille reminiscent of a big smile. The car you see here is a 1965 Austin Healey 3000 Mk.III BJ8 finished in British Racing Green over a black interior, and showing approximately 49,285 miles on the mechanical odometer.
While the "Big Healeys" were beautiful in any of the color options offered, there is just something special about a Healey finished in British Racing Green. It's a classic color for any British car, and a nod to the racing heritage of British manufacturers from Bentley racers to the small Austin cars, and so many in between. This particular Healey shows very well with even glossy paint throughout, and body panels which line up as they should. Lights are in very nice condition, and the chrome brightwork is in beautiful condition, right down to the "smile" at the front of the car. Chrome knockoff wheels are wrapped in radial tires, and the combination of the top and tonneau cover are in very nice condition. The underside of the car is in beautiful condition, with focal points being the painted frame, and the long muffler mounted off to one side, which connects to the long twin tailpipes.
Situated in the driver's seat is the place to be in this beautiful British roadster. Motoring along British country roads, or thoroughfares through small towns is what this car was built for. Simple well cushioned bucket seats are finished in black, as are the door panels and the back seats. A beautiful wood dashboard panel finished in a high gloss lacquer was a common piece of kit in a British car at the time, but it sure makes the interior feel elegant. Smiths gauges display engine vitals, while a few neatly placed toggle switches control things like lights and wipers. The interior has clearly been cared for over the years and the current condition reflects that.
Under the hood - or should we say bonnet - is a 2912cc six-cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox, which has overdrive. The engine bay is very tidy, from the light green painted engine, to the yellow painted fan blades. All the details are there.
This Healey is a beautiful car, which has been well preserved and cared for. As a car coveted by British car enthusiasts it has the goods and is finished in an unforgettable exterior color. Not to mention the car has front end styling reminiscent of a smiling face. What a great thing to see when opening your garage, a car that is smiling back at you! With classic charm and the driving experience it provides, this car will have you grinning from ear to ear.
