This 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was dispatched to a dealership in New Orleans, Louisiana, in January 1964, and a refurbishment conducted by Kurt Tanner Restorations was completed in 2008. The car is finished in California Sage with a green soft top over beige leather upholstery, and it is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Equipment includes 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, PerTronix electronic ignition, an auxiliary electric cooling fan, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, an updated Blaupunkt AM radio, three-point seatbelts, and a top boot. This Healey was purchased by the seller in 2010 and is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, an owner’s manual, spare parts, the removed steering wheel and shift knob, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
Finished from the factory in black with a black soft top over a red interior, the car was repainted in California Sage during the aforementioned refurbishment, according to the seller. The green folding soft top has been replaced, and other features include a top boot, a hood scoop, a driver-side mirror, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The door welting on both sides was replaced in 2013, and the turn signals were repaired. The seller notes that some chrome parts exhibit corrosion.
Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 175/80 BFGoodrich Touring T/A Radial tires. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums.
The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats that have been retrimmed in beige leather. A Blaupunkt AM radio stationed in the center console has been updated with an auxiliary input and plays through removable aftermarket speakers. Three-point shoulder belts have been installed. The car is also appointed with wood dashboard trim, beige carpeting, a wood shift knob, a cabin heater, and a locking glovebox. The key for the locking glovebox is not included and wear is visible on the driver’s seat.
An aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 18k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership. The seller states that the odometer reading is not accurate, and true mileage is unknown. The speedometer was repaired in 2013, and the fuel gauge and sender were replaced in 2014. The fuel gauge is inaccurate.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. PerTronix ignition and an auxiliary electric cooling fan have been added. The radiator core was replaced in 2015, the seller tells us, and the electric fan and a coolant overflow bottle were installed.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. Second gear was replaced in 2013, and the transmission was rebuilt. The clutch slave cylinder also was replaced that year.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists a build date in December 1963, delivery to a dealership in New Orleans, and selected options and equipment.
