This 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III is a Canadian-market example that was delivered new to Vancouver, British Columbia, and underwent a mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment before being acquired by the seller two years ago. Work consisted of refinishing the body in Old English White, replacing the frame, and reupholstering the cabin in black leather along with rebuilding and modifying the 3.0-liter inline-six and overhauling the four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Additional equipment includes a black soft top, a left driving light, chrome 60-spoke wire wheels, twin SU carburetors, a Denis Welch steering box, front disc brakes, an electronic ignition, wood trim, and a Nardi steering wheel on an adjustable column. An oil change was performed under the seller’s ownership. This 3000 BJ8 Mk III is now offered with refurbishment photos, a knock-off hammer, a tonneau cover, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, and an Ontario registration document in the seller’s name.
The car was originally delivered in Ivory White and was repainted in the current shade of Old English White during the aforementioned refurbishment under previous ownership after rust repairs were completed and replacement panels were installed. A custom frame was fabricated with heavier-gauge steel and welded, and the inside frame rails were coated with a zinc slurry. A replacement black soft top and boot top were also installed, and additional equipment includes LED lighting and headlights, a left driving light, vent windows, a windshield-mounted driver’s mirror, twin exhaust tips, and chrome bumpers and trim.
Chrome-finished 60-spoke 15″ wire wheels are fitted with 180-series Michelin XAS tires that show 2016 date codes. A spare tire is stored in the trunk. The suspension was reportedly overhauled during the refurbishment with a lowering kit and replacement leaf springs, and a replacement Denis Welch steering box was installed. The front disc and rear drum brakes were reportedly overhauled, as well.
The interior is upholstered in replacement black leather sourced from John Skinner Ltd., which is joined by a matching center console, dash topper, and door panels along with a wood dashboard and replacement black carpeting. Additional equipment includes rubber floor mats, a wind deflector, lap seatbelts, a locking glove box, a wood shift knob, and a heater. A BMC radio is included in the sale.
The wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel is mounted to an adjustable column and fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 14k miles. Total mileage is unknown. The factory wheel is included in the sale.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was overhauled under previous ownership with work that included:
Resurfacing and balancing the camshafts
Boring the cylinders .030″ over
Installing forged pistons
Rebuilding and porting the cylinder head
Replacing the main and rod bearings
Installing a Denis Welsh fast road camshaft
Lightening and shot peening the connecting rods
The SU HD8 carburetors have been rebuilt, the wiring harness was replaced, and a rebuilt generator, starter, and wiper motors were also installed. The radiator was refurbished, the oil and fuel pumps were replaced, and an electronic ignition system was also installed. An oil change was performed under current ownership.
The engine tag reads 29K/RU/H1753, which corresponds with the engine number listed on the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with switch-activated overdrive. The transmission was reportedly rebuilt with replacement synchros, bearings, clutch, and throw-out bearing under prior ownership.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the car was dispatched to Vancouver, British Columbia on June 22, 1964, and lists the serial numbers, colors, and equipment along with the build date and destination.
Photos taken during various stages of refurbishment work can be viewed in the gallery.
The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a province that does not issue titles for vehicles. It is being sold on its Ontario registration.
