Lot 70
1965 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III BJ8 Convertible
To be auctioned on Friday, January 17, 2014
Sold for $71,500
Chassis no. H-BJ8-L/27207
Engine no. 29K-RU-H/1900
This particular 3000 Mk III BJ8 has received a concours-quality restoration. The car was originally painted red with a black hood and trim, but during its restoration, it was treated to a color combination of a Sage Green exterior and a Biscuit color interior. All work was done by noted British car restoration expert Kurt Tanner, of Claremont, California, whose restorations are known for their attention to detail and authenticity.
It had undergone a frame-off, rotisserie, nut-and-bolt restoration when it was sold in late 2009, and since that time, it has been driven no more than 100 miles. Factory-installed equipment found on the car includes wire wheels, an overdrive unit, a laminated windscreen, a heater, and an adjustable steering column. The car's build date was from May 14-15, 1964, as confirmed by the BMIHT Certificate, which is included with the car.
This is a classic British sports car of timeless beauty, and it will give its owner continued pleasure and a solid investment, over time.

This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was dispatched to San Francisco, California, in May 1964, and a refurbishment conducted by Kurt Tanner Restorations was completed around 2009. The car is finished in California Sage with a green soft top over cream-colored leather upholstery, and it is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Features include 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, dual SU carburetors, a banjo-style steering wheel, a wood dashboard, lap belts, and a top boot. This 3000 Mk III was acquired by the selling dealer in early 2025 and is now offered in Colorado with an Ohio title.
Finished from the factory in red over a black interior, the car was repainted in California Sage during the aforementioned refurbishment, according to the seller. The green folding soft top has been replaced, and other features include a top boot, a hood scoop, A-pillar-mounted dual side mirrors, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 175/80 BFGoodrich Touring T/A QR4 tires, which the seller states are more than five years old. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums.
The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats that have been retrimmed in cream-colored leather. Interior appointments include a wood dashboard fascia, beige carpeting, black lap belts, crank windows, a cabin heater, a locking glovebox, and an ashtray.
The banjo-style steering wheel is attached to an adjustable column and frames refurbished Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 86k miles, and approximately 2k miles are said to have been added since completion of the refurbishment.
The 29K 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive.
The Ohio title carries an “Actual” odometer brand.
