Lot #123350
This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III underwent a refurbishment completed in the early 2000s with work including a repaint in red, an overhaul of the 2.9-liter inline-six, and the installation of a five-speed Toyota manual transmission using a Smitty conversion kit. It is equipped with a black soft top and top boot, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, dual SU carburetors, black vinyl upholstery, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. The car was acquired by the current owner in 2015, and work in preparation for the sale is said to include repairs to the kingpins, replacement of the clutch slave cylinder, and an oil change. This BJ8 is now offered on dealer consignment with service records, manufacturer’s literature, a tonneau cover, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment photos, and a New Hampshire title.
The car left the factory in Colorado Red and was repainted during a refurbishment in the early 2000s. Exterior details include a replacement black soft top and matching top boot, chrome bumpers with overriders, fender-mounted side mirrors, bright trim, and dual upswept exhaust tips. A black tonneau cover will accompany the car. The seller notes the top material is tight and the top does not seal completely, while imperfections can be seen.
Silver-finished 15″ wire wheels are secured with two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with 165-series Michelin XZX tires. Stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes. The kingpins were repaired in preparation for the sale.
The 2+2 cockpit features front bucket seats and rear seat pads upholstered in black vinyl with matching carpets. Wood veneer trim accents the dashboard, and additional appointments include a heater, a wooden gearshift knob, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and Austin-Healey-branded carpeted floor mats.
The wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and supplemental gauges. The five-digit odometer is said to have been rebuilt during the aforementioned refurbishment and now shows 28k miles, which is said to reflect the mileage since the refurbishment in 2002. Approximately 17k miles have been covered under current ownership, while total mileage is unknown. Play is reported in the steering wheel.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was reportedly overhauled during the refurbishment and is equipped with dual SU carburetors and a Pertronix electronic ignition conversion. An oil change was performed in preparation for the sale.
A Toyota-sourced five-speed manual gearbox was installed using a Smitty conversion kit, and the car is equipped with a dual stainless-steel exhaust system. The clutch slave cylinder is stated to have been recently replaced.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate notes the car’s production and dispatch dates as well as its factory colors, equipment, and identification numbers. Manufacturer’s literature is also included in the sale.
The New Hampshire title carries an “Antique” brand.
