This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was acquired by the current owner in 2019, and a subsequent service involved rebuilding the clutch master cylinder and carburetors as well as installing an alternator, Pertronix electronic ignition, and a spin-on oil filter conversion. The car is finished in black over red and is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. This 3000 Mk III is now offered in Statesville, North Carolina on dealer consignment with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate and a clean Virginia title.
The car came finished from the factory in black (BK1), and paint meter readings are provided in the gallery. Blemishes throughout the body are visible and the black soft top is torn.
The 15″ knock-off wire wheels were mounted with 165-15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires in 2024. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. Rear tube shocks have been installed. The seller states that the brake master cylinder and booster were replaced in 2024.
The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats trimmed in red, and interior appointments include a cabin heater, a locking glovebox, and wood trim. The radio is missing the knobs, the wood trim is cracked, the seat bolsters are damaged, and the carpets are worn.
The banjo-style steering wheel wears a lace-up cover and frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 73k miles, approximately 5k of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. Work in 2019 included rebuilding the carburetors, adjusting the valves, and installing an alternator, Pertronix ignition, and a spin-on oil filer. The spark plugs, battery, valve cover gasket, fuel pump, and thermostat were also replaced at that time. A battery disconnect switch has been added. Oil leaks are noted.
Engine ID 29KRUH3377 corresponds with the engine number listed on the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. The clutch master cylinder was rebuilt in 2019. A dual exhaust system has been added. Rust on the trunk floor is visible.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate lists the factory colors and equipment along with a build date in October 1964.
