This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 MkIII was acquired by the current owner in 1974 and underwent a refurbishment in the 1980s. The car is finished in red with white side scallops over a black 2+2 interior, and it is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Equipment includes a black soft top, a front badge bar, burl wood dash veneers, driving lights, 15″ chrome knock-off wire wheels, and a banjo-style steering wheel. Modifications include rear disc brakes, an oil cooler, and a Sony CD stereo. This BJ8 Mk III is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, service records and a clean Michigan title.
The car was refinished in two-tone red and white as part of the refurbishment, and equipment includes driving lights, an engine skid plate, a louvered hood, a front badge bar, a hood scoop, vent windows, chrome bumpers with overriders, and a dual-exit exhaust.
Chrome 15″ wire wheels are equipped with three-eared knock-off spinners and mounted with 175-series Michelin ZX tires. A matching spare wheel with a Michelin X tire is stored in the trunk. Power-assisted brakes fitted with dual master cylinders and a replacement servo use rear Jaguar XJ6-style calipers over cross-drilled discs reportedly sourced from Denis Welch Motorsport of Burton on Trent, England. The suspension has been modified to accommodate tube-style dampers front and rear.
The 2+2 interior is trimmed in black upholstery with gold piping and is equipped with color-matching door panels and carpets protected by rubber floor mats. Features include a dash-mounted rearview mirror, roll-up side windows, burl wood dash veneers, a Sony CD stereo, a widened throttle pedal, drilled brake and clutch pedals, and lap belts for the front occupants.
A banjo-style steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer was reset when the aforementioned refurbishment took place and now shows 7k miles. Total mileage is unknown.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was rated at 148 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque when new. The car breathes through twin SU carburetors that were reportedly serviced in 2020. An oil cooler, an aluminum-alloy radiator, a spin-on oil filter, a baffled aluminum oil pan, a stainless-steel exhaust system, and a polished valve cover bearing Austin-Healey script are fitted.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows a November 1964 build date along with factory colors, equipment and a chassis number of H-BJ8-L/29762, which matches the numbers listed on the title on the replacement data plate mounted in the engine bay.
Binders containing service records and documentation of the aforementioned refurbishment are included in the sale.
