This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was acquired by the current owner in 1999 and subsequently underwent a refurbishment that was completed in 2002. The car was repainted Sapphire Blue and the interior reupholstered in tan leather, and additional alterations include 3.54:1 rear gearing, a PBR brake booster, Bilstein shocks, Pertronix ignition, a negative-ground conversion, an aluminum fuel tank, and a front camber kit. Power is supplied by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive and the car is also equipped with a body-color hardtop, a tan soft top, chrome 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, a top boot, a tonneau cover, a cabin heater, and front bucket seats. It has received a number of first-place and best-of-show awards from local events over the last two decades and was featured on the cover of the 2024 Moss Motors Austin-Healey parts catalog. This 3000 Mk III is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner in California with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, a spare decklid, and a Nevada title in the owner’s name.

Finished from the factory in British Racing Green, the car was repainted a Jaguar shade of Sapphire Blue during the refurbishment and was fitted with a tan replacement soft top. A Nical Engineering body-color hardtop also accompanies the vehicle along with a spare decklid with a luggage rack. Additional equipment includes LED taillights and turn signals, dual bullet-style side mirrors, a top boot, a tonneau cover, a hood scoop, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders.

Chrome 15″ knock-off 72-spoke wire wheels are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires measuring 185/70. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. A PBR brake booster has been installed along with Bilstein shocks and a front camber kit.

The two-seat cabin features bucket seats that have been retrimmed in tan leather, and interior appointments include a cabin heater, a center console, a locking glovebox, wood trim, three-point front seatbelts, and a passenger-side grab handle. A wiper delay switch has been added along with power outlets behind the center console.

The Moto-Lita steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation fitted with LED bulbs, consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. A Smiths voltage gauge has been added. The five-digit odometer was reset to zero at the time of the refurbishment and now shows 46k miles. Total chassis mileage is unknown.

The 2.9-liter inline-six features dual SU carburetors and was reportedly rebuilt, bored .030″ over, and fitted with a custom camshaft during the refurbishment. Additional equipment includes Pertronix ignition, a negative-ground alternator conversion, a Ray Juncal valve cover, an auxiliary electric fuel pump, an aluminum fuel tank, and a spin-on oil filter.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock-de Normanville electric overdrive and a rear differential with 3.54:1 gearing. A clutch bleed valve extension and a lightened flywheel have been added, and the seller states that the transmission was rebuilt in 2018, at which time the clutch was replaced.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate lists a build date in November 1964 and original delivery to Seattle, Washington, along with the factory colors and equipment.

The Nevada title lists “Exempt” under the odometer brands section.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
