This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was acquired by the current owner in 1983 out of Arizona and relocated to Texas. A multi-year refurbishment was completed in 2009 that involved rebuilding and overboring the 2.9-liter inline-six as well as rebuilding the four-speed manual transmission and the overdrive unit. A 3.54 gear set was installed in the rear differential, and the engine was fitted with a revised camshaft and a stainless-steel exhaust system. The car was refinished in green and white following bodywork, and the 2+2 cabin was refreshed with black leather upholstery. Additional equipment includes 15″ knock-off wire wheels, a replacement steering box, a cabin heater, front seat belts, and a black soft top, top boot, and tonneau cover. This 3000 Mk III is now offered at no reserve with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, service records, a seller-provided refurbishment summary, and a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.
Finished from the factory in British Racing Green, the car was repainted in its current combination of green over white during the aforementioned refurbishment work, and repairs were made to the frame. The car has also been equipped with a Robbins black soft top, which includes a zip-out rear window. Other details include a black top boot, a hood scoop, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
Knock-off 15″ wire wheels are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires that were installed in 2023. A replacement steering box is fitted, and the brake servo was rebuilt.
Black leather upholstery covers the seats in the 2+2 cabin, which is equipped with a wood dash panel, a center console, front seatbelts, and a cabin heater. The seller notes that areas of the floor and trunk panels have been replaced.
The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation, consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges, some of which have been rebuilt. The five-digit odometer has rolled over and shows 10k miles. Approximately 20k miles have been added under current ownership.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory, and refurbishment work involved rebuilding and boring the engine .030″ over. Replacement components include a revised camshaft, a stainless-steel exhaust system, and hardened valve seats. In addition, the distributor was rebuilt, the wiring harness was replaced, and a Texas Kooler fan was added to the replacement radiator. The fuel pump was replaced in 2024.
The four-speed manual transmission and the Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive were overhauled, the differential was outfitted with a 3.54 gear set, and the driveshaft was balanced. In 2025, the transmission fluid was replaced, and the seller reports that the flywheel has been lightened. Underside corrosion is noted.
A series of binders containing information related to the car’s history is included in the sale along with various records and handwritten notes.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate lists production information and identification numbers.
