This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was purchased by the seller in 1997, and a refurbishment costing an estimated $120k between 2010 and 2025 included disassembling and refinishing the car in white and red over leather upholstery, overhauling the brakes and suspension, and replacing assorted electrical, fuel delivery, trim components, and more. Powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, the car has a Crane Cams performance camshaft, an aluminum radiator, a high-volume cooling fan, a high-torque starter, and a stainless-steel exhaust system with a MagnaFlow rear resonator. Further equipment includes a replacement black soft top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, a top boot, a hood scoop, a cabin heater, and front bucket seats. This 3000 Mk III is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment records, Austin-Healey catalogs and literature, and an Ohio title in the seller’s name.
The car was finished in Healey Blue from the factory, and it was repainted in Old English White with red coves between 2020 and 2022. Further refurbishments included repairing the rocker panels, replacing the windshield and side window glass, and replacing or re-chroming the exterior trim as needed. Exterior details consist of a folding replacement black soft top, a top boot, a hood scoop, bright trim, Lucas PL headlights, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The front driving lights are not connected to the electrical system. Invoices from the car’s reassembly come with the car.
The silver-painted 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 165-series Michelin XZX tires. The brakes and suspension are said to have been overhauled during the refurbishment, and the seller notes that the brake lines, wheel cylinders, master cylinder seals, brake pads, rotors, and calipers were replaced at that time. The front wheel bearing races were reset on the spindles in January 2022 to correct the caliper alignment. The Girling brake servo was rebuilt last winter, according to the seller. Wear is noted on the wheel knock-offs.
The refurbished 2+2 cabin features bucket seats trimmed in replacement red leather upholstery along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Additional interior appointments include a cabin heater, a locking glovebox, Austin-Healey-branded rubber floor mats, front lap belts, and wood trim. The seat tracks were media blasted, refinished, and reassembled with replacement ball bearings in January 2022.
A banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer has rolled over and shows 9k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership. Replacement Lucas-style wiring harnesses were installed during the refurbishment.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was overhauled under previous ownership, and the seller tells us the block and head were magnafluxed before the head was rebuilt and reassembly was completed with a Crane Cams performance camshaft and replacement pistons, bearings, timing components, and lifters. The fuel pump and lines were also replaced. Approximately 3k miles are said to have been added since the engine build. The seller notes that the distributor was rebuilt and re-curved for the performance camshaft this past winter, and the SU HD8 carburetors were overhauled under current ownership. An aluminum radiator, a high-volume cooling fan, a high-torque starter, and replacement ignition and electrical components were installed during the refurbishment. Work in January 2022 included replacing the radiator hoses, fuel tank and sending unit, and battery along with reinstalling the throttle linkage, valve cover, and manifolds.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. Work performed in January 2022 included changing the fluids in the differential and transmission along with installing a replacement clutch master cylinder and a stainless-steel exhaust system with a MagnaFlow rear resonator. The transmission is sometimes difficult to shift into first and second gear, and the shifter mechanism is said to have been inspected recently. The seller tells us they suspect the issue is related to the shift linkage or overdrive lock-out switch.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate indicates that the car was built in February 1965, and lists the factory serial numbers, colors, and equipment.
The current Ohio title lists an “Exceeds Mechanical Limits” mileage brand.
