This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was dispatched to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in March 1965. The car is said to have remained with its original owner in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, until 1984 and was cared for by its second owner—also in Lancaster—through 2020, when its current owner purchased the vehicle. Subsequent work has involved replacing the black soft top, rod and main bearings, timing chain, various gaskets, transmission mounts, clutch, brake pads, sway-bar bushings, and trunk lining; overhauling the ignition, fuel, and cooling systems; converting the electrical system to negative ground; and repairing the tachometer and the steering column. Finished in British Racing Green over black vinyl upholstery, the Healey is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Features include dual SU carburetors, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, a luggage rack, a wood dashboard, and an Alpine AM/FM/cassette stereo. Now showing 53k miles, this BJ8 is offered on dealer consignment with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, service records dating back to 1984, and a Pennsylvania title in the owner’s name.
The car was finished from the factory in Dark British Racing Green, and the seller tells us that it was repainted at some point prior to 1984. The folding black soft top was replaced in 2020, and some wood pieces of the top frame were re-covered. Other equipment includes a hood scoop, a Talbot driver-side mirror, a luggage rack, bright trim, dual exhaust outlets, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The seller notes a crease and scrape on the passenger door and right-front fender, two dents in the passenger-side quarter panel, and chips and checks in the paint.
Silver-painted 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 165HR15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The brake pads were replaced in 2021, the sway-bar bushings and driver-side link were renewed in 2022, and the spare tire and its tie-down bolts were replaced in 2024.
The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats trimmed in black Ambla vinyl with contrasting piping. Interior appointments include a wood dashboard, a wood shift knob, an Alpine AM/FM/cassette stereo, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a center console, seatbelts, a locking glovebox, black carpeting, and rubber floor mats. The brake-light switch was replaced and the driver-seat backrest was repaired in 2020. The trunk lining was replaced in 2024. Cracks are noted in the dash.
The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination readout displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 53k miles, approximately 2,500 of which were added under current ownership. The telescoping steering column was repaired in 2020, and the tachometer was repaired and rewired. The horn fuse was replaced in 2021.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. Service performed since 2020 has included the following:

Converted electrical system to negative ground

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. The following work has been conducted under current ownership:

Replaced gearbox-mount bushings
Replaced rear plate gasket
Changed transmission fluid
Cleaned overdrive screen

More than $16k worth of work performed since 2020 is documented on receipts from Fred Heistand Automotive of Manheim, Pennsylvania, records since 1984.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the car was built in March 1965 and was soon dispatched to Philadelphia. The certificate also lists the vehicle’s component numbers and original colors and options.
The Pennsylvania title carries an “Antique Vehicle” brand.
