This 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III is a running project that was first dispatched to Germany before it was imported to the US under prior ownership. It was acquired by the seller in 1996 following a reported period of long-term storage. The car is finished in silver and black over black leather upholstery and is equipped with a 2.9-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The factory specified dual SU carburetors, knock-off 15″ wire wheels, front disc brakes, a black soft top and boot, and leather upholstery. Service since 2022 included rebuilding the carburetors and replacing distributor and ignition components, the fuel pump, fuel tank, and the battery. This BJ8 project is now offered with removed parts, a BMIHT certificate, and a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.

The car left the factory in British Racing Green, and rust repair was reportedly carried out on the rear fenders under prior ownership before it was repainted silver and black. The black convertible top is torn and the rear window is oxidized. Rust holes are visible on the rocker panels and around the rear wheel arches. The paint is cracked, faded, and missing in some areas and can be seen in the photo gallery below.

The factory front and replacement rear 15″ wire wheels are secured with German-market knock-offs and are mounted with 155-series Uniroyal Rallye tires that should be replaced due to age. The car is equipped with front disc and rear drum brakes, though the seller states that the hydraulic system requires service in order for the car to be roadworthy.

The carpeting, center console, and armrest have been removed. There are tears in the passenger seat upholstery and cracks in the wood dashboard veneers. Interior equipment includes a padded dashboard, a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, and a glovebox. The removed leather seat bottoms and interior trim panels, center console, and armrest will accompany the car.

The banjo-style steering wheel sits on an adjustable column and fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a replacement 140-mph speedometer, supplementary gauges, and a refurbished tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 29k miles, and total mileage is unknown.

The 2.9-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors that were rebuilt in 2022. Additional work at that time is said to have included installing an SU fuel pump and a replacement fuel tank and fuel sending unit as well as replacing the distributor cap and rotor, the spark plug wires and ends, spark plugs, and battery. An oil and filter change was performed in preparation for the sale. The seller notes some cooling system hoses are missing and the generator needs servicing.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and a transmission fluid change was performed in August 2022 according to the seller. Areas of rust-through are visible on the trunk floor and exhaust system, and one exhaust outlet is missing.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists component number, colors, options, and an October 4, 1965 dispatch date to Germany.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
