This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III is said to have been acquired by the seller’s cousin in 1970 and it was purchased by the seller circa 1990. The car remained in storage until 2015, and subsequent refurbishments reportedly included a repaint in green, sheet metal repairs, overhauling and overboring the 2.9-liter inline-six, installing an alternator, deleting the rear seats, and replacing the black vinyl upholstery, 15″ wire wheels, and clutch, ignition, and fuel system components. Additional equipment includes a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive as well as a replacement sot top and tonneau cover, BJ7-style rear exhaust components, an aftermarket cooling fan, a high-torque starter, and twin SU carburetors. This BJ8 Mk III is now offered at no reserve with a clean Ohio title in the seller’s name.
The seller states that portions of the front and rear fenders, sills, rockers and floor and trunk floor pans were replaced before the car was repainted in the current shade of green between 2015 and 2016. Exterior details consist of a replacement black soft top, top boot, and tonneau cover as well as a hood scoop, chrome-plated bumpers and trim, and twin exhaust outlets. There are scratches in the windshield, the high-beam function for the headlights is inoperative, and photos of chips, dull paint, and blemishes are visible.
Replacement chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-off spinners and they are mounted with Sumitomo Touring LST tires. The seller reports that the majority of the brake components were replaced or rebuilt during the refurbishment. The brake booster has been removed and is said to require rebuilding.
The bucket seats were reupholstered in black vinyl with white piping, and the seller states that replacement foam padding was installed at that time, along with a replacement dashboard panel and padding. A carpeted panel has been installed in the place of the rear seats, and additional interior appointments consist of a fire extinguisher, Austin-Healey-branded lap belts and floor mats and heat insulating material underneath the carpeting. The seller reports that the heater was also refurbished. The choke cable is loose.
A banjo-style steering wheel fronts a Smiths 140-mph, a replacement tachometer, and a combination gauge for coolant temperature and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 66k miles, approximately 5k of which were added under current ownership.
The seller reports that the 2.9-liter inline-six was overhauled circa 2015 with work including overboring the block, surfacing the cylinder head and the top of the block, installing .020″ pistons and undersized crankshaft bearings, rebuilding the carburetors and distributor, and replacing the oil pump, valves, valve springs, freeze plugs, coolant hoses, assorted ignition components, and the fuel system. A GM-specification alternator, a high-torque starter, and a Texas Kooler fan have been installed, and electrical repairs were performed under current ownership, according to the seller. An oil change and flush of fluids was performed in preparation for the sale. Oil residue is present on the underside of the driveline.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with an electrically actuated overdrive unit. The clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and slave cylinder were replaced during the refurbishment, according to the seller. BJ7-style rear exhaust components have been installed along with square steel tubing under the rear portion and angle iron on the upper portion of the frame. The seller reports that undercoating has been applied beneath the car.
