This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was refurbished over the course of two years just prior to the current owner’s acquisition of the vehicle out of a California estate in 2018. A Toyota-sourced five-speed manual transmission has been matched with the 2.9-liter inline-six, and the car is finished in white over black leather with white piping. Features include a black soft top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, dual SU carburetors, a gear-reduction starter, a Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a wood dashboard fascia. This BJ8 is now offered on dealer consignment with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate and a clean California title.

Finished from the factory in British Racing Green, the car is said to have been stripped and repainted in Ivory White during the aforementioned refurbishment. The folding black soft top has been replaced, and other equipment includes a black top boot, a hood scoop, a driver-side mirror, dual exhaust outlets, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders.

Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 165/80 Classic Radial LL800 tires. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums.

The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats that have been retrimmed in black leather with white piping. Interior appointments include a wood dashboard fascia, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a cabin heater, a locking glovebox, and black carpeting.

The Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 37k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership.

The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. The seller states that an updated main-seal gasket and a gear-reduction starter have been fitted.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Toyota-sourced five-speed manual transmission that was installed during the refurbishment.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the car was built in October 1966 and was soon dispatched to Charleston in the United States. The certificate also lists the vehicle’s component numbers and original colors and options.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
