This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III has been owned in California since new and was acquired by the seller in 1975. It is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission and is finished in British Racing Green over Black Ambla vinyl. Equipment includes a black soft top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, a top boot, a tonneau cover, a hood scoop, a push-button radio, a cabin heater, and front bucket seats. A replacement windshield was installed in 2022 and the points and condenser were replaced in 2024. This 3000 Mk III is now offered at no reserve with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, the owner’s manual, service records, spare parts, a tool kit, a scale model, memorabilia, a car cover, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The car is finished in British Racing Green (GN25) and received a two-stage repaint in 1987. A replacement black soft top was also installed in the late-1980s, while a replacement windshield was installed in 2022. The seller notes pitting on the chrome grille and trunk latch as well as corrosion on the lower body panels and in the floors. Various chips and scratches are shown in the gallery. A torn tonneau cover and a black soft top boot accompany the vehicle.

Powder-coated 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 165SR15 Michelin XZX tires that were installed in the late 1990s. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The seller notes that the left front brake caliper drags and requires attention.

The two-seat cabin features bucket seats trimmed in Black Ambla vinyl, and interior appointments include roll-up windows, a push-button radio, a cabin heater, a center console, a locking glovebox, and wood trim. The heater valve was replaced in 2022. There are cracks in the wood trim, the carpets are faded, and the trunk liner is deteriorating.

The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 85k miles, approximately 49k of which were added under current ownership. The horn is inoperative.

The 2.9-liter inline-six features dual SU HD8 carburetors and was factory rated at 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. The points and condenser were replaced in 2024. Oil leaks are noted.

The engine tag is corresponds to the number is listed on the BMIHT certificate.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock-de Normanville electric overdrive. There are leaks from the transmission, and the seller notes various welded repairs and dents on the frame.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate lists the factory colors, equipment, and serial numbers along with a production date in January 1967.

Chassis number HBJ8L40347 is shown above, and the sequence is used as the VIN on the California title prepended by “67.”

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
