This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 is a late-production Mark III export model finished in British Racing Green over a black Ambla interior. The car was relocated in 1983 from Georgia to the Wilmington, Delaware area, where it was parked in a shipping container. The current owner is a longtime European automotive technician and former shop owner who has known the car’s whereabouts since the mid-1980s. It had been off the road for nearly 30 years when he acquired it from the longtime previous owner in 2013. Subsequent work included a repaint in the factory color, rebuilds of the front suspension and brakes, and the installation of four new chrome wheels, a new convertible top, and more as outlined in the listing below. Power is provided by the numbers-matching 2.9-liter inline-six, which backed by the original 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. Approximately 1,500 miles have been added since the refurbishment was completed in 2017. This BJ8 is now being offered on behalf of the current owner with a factory jack and tools, tonneau and boot cover, a BMIHT certificate, and a clear Delaware title.
The 2016-2017 repaint process included removal of the trim, glass, lights, and bumpers. All four of the fenders, as well as the bonnet, trunk, and doors, were separated and stripped to bare metal along with the rest of the exterior. The original cabin floors were thin and rusty in areas, and both sides and the inner rockers were replaced.
New fender beading and rubber seals were installed during reassembly. Stickers from the Plantation Club, Mercer University, and a 1982 Georgia inspection remain affixed to the bumpers and windshield. Pitting is visible in the windshield surround and brightwork.
New chrome wire wheels are wrapped in a set of 165-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Four new chrome spinners and rear spline hubs have been installed. Photos of the replacement black convertible top, factory boot cover, and tonneau are provided in the gallery below
Ambla black upholstery with chrome piping remains installed on the front and rear seats. The door panels are replacement items, and new black carpet and Dynamat covers the floors and center console. Interior features include a leather-wrapped factory steering wheel, roll-up windows, and an aftermarket riser for the rearview mirror, enabling the driver to see behind the boot cover.
Madera Concepts of Goleta, California supplied the new burl wood dash, and the vinyl top has also been recovered. All four of the Smiths gauges were serviced by Nisonger Instruments. 35k miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer.
The C-series 2.9L inline-six was raised in output to 150 horsepower and 158 lb-ft of torque for Mark III production. Mechanical service following the longterm storage included fluid flushes and a valve adjustment, as well as a tune-up including replacement points, plug wires, and a distributor cap. The twin SU HD8 carburetors were also overhauled, and a new fuel tank and SU fuel pump were installed. Charging is handled by a rebuilt generator and a new Lucas voltage regulator.
Closeups of engine tag #29K-RU-H/15531 and gearbox stamping #15424 are shown. Both match the numbers on BMIHT certificate.
The 4-speed manual gearbox features a Laycock overdrive, and the hydraulic clutch components have been replaced. Both front swivel axles were sent out and professionally rebuilt with new bushings and kingpins. Replacement lever-action shocks are fitted up front.
This 3000 features Phase II rear suspension with twin radius rods and six-leaf springs. Power-assisted front discs and rear drums came standard on the Mark III, and the system benefits from a replacement master cylinder, booster, front calipers, rear-wheel cylinders, rotors, and hoses. Additional photos of the undercarriage, wheels wells, and exhaust are provided in the gallery below.
The included British Motoring Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists a build date in early March 1967. It also confirms the original configuration of British Racing Green with a black interior and convertible top.
The silver-painted spare wheel is wrapped in a newer Vredestein tire.
