1961 Austin-Healey 3000 MK II BN7 Deluxe Roadster To be auctioned on Saturday
LOT: 223
Estimate: $110,000-$130,000 US
Chassis No. HBN7L14164
Offered Without Reserve
- A very desirable "tri-carb, center-shift" two-seat model
- Extremely rare as one of 355 produced and one of 132 exported to the USA
- Complete restoration by Healey Lane with a one-year driveline warranty
- Accompanied by a BMIHT certificate and documented in the Tri-Carb Registry
This car is one of only 355 two-seat 1961 Austin-Healey Mark IIs and also one of the final 3.0-liter two-seaters ever built, second only to the 100S in terms of production numbers. Their flawless Gerry Coker body design is without doubt the most attractive of these treasured British classics, and such features as their triple-carb, 132 hp 'six' and front disc brakes provide performance far above both the earlier cars and the later BJ8.
This example is one of only 132 exported to the USA in 1961 and benefits from a total nut-and-bolt, body-off-frame restoration by marque specialists Tom and Randee Rocke of Riverside, California's Healey Lane. The body and chassis were given a bare-metal refinish, with the exterior sporting two-stage DuPont Gun Metal Gray over Colorado Red. A complete new interior was installed, with red-piped red seat upholstery and matching wool carpets, plus a panel kit, a new trunk kit, new side curtains, a black soft top and a black tonneau cover.
All-new parts were used to rebuild the engine, center-shift gearbox, overdrive and ancillary systems. The exhaust is a new, jet-coated steel system. An all-new cloth wiring harness and new or rebuilt electrical components were installed. A completely new fuel system was installed, including a new tank and lines, and the triple SU HS4 carburetors were rebuilt. All-new brake lines, front disc brakes, jet-coated rear brake drums and a new master cylinder were installed as well. All interior and exterior brightwork was triple-plated for a lasting shine. A new front and rear suspension, chrome Dunlop 60-spoke wire wheels and 185 x 15 Roadspeed tires round out the package.
Once completed, limited test mileage was covered to ensure proper sorting and performance. As such, the car is fresh and ready for the next owner to enjoy and show. No expense was spared, and most of the parts used in the restoration were purchased new from England. This photo-documented restoration is accompanied by a British Motor Heritage Industry Trust certificate and is verified by Bill Bolton of the Tri-Carb Registry. In addition, Healey Lane stands behind the car with a one-year driveline warranty.

Auction description:
Lot 136
1961 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk II BN7 Roadster
To be auctioned on Friday, August 15, 2014
Without Reserve
$90,000 - $130,000
Chassis no. H-BN7-L/14164
Engine no. 29E-RU-H/635
Body no. 13818
The rarest production model, with just 355 built
Matching-numbers example; finished in stunning grey metallic and red
Only test miles since frame-off restoration
British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate
The car offered here is an outstanding example of the pinnacle of the Austin-Healey brand. This model, the 3000 Mk II Roadster, boasts triple SU carburetors and 132 horsepower, making it the most powerful Austin-Healey from the roadster period. It was built to North American specifications and dispatched from the factory on June 16, 1961, for personal export to the United States. It was finished in Colorado Red with red trim, it was equipped with a radio, heater, electric overdrive, and adjustable steering column, and it had wire wheels that were mounted with Dunlop Roadspeed tires.
This very rare Austin-Healey has since received a nut-and-bolt restoration by Healey Lane Restorations, of Riverside, California. All of the sheet metal was shot-blasted to bare metal and then finished in DuPont two-stage urethane. It has been repainted in dramatic gunmetal grey, with the side coves being painted in the original Colorado Red, highlighting the muscular curves of the Big Healey as few color combinations can. The new interior was fitted with red seats with matching piping and matching wool carpets and panels. The engine, transmission, and all of its mechanical systems were rebuilt with the same attention to detail, and a new fuel tank and fuel and brake lines were fitted.
This very rare and very striking Big Healey, driven just a few test miles since completion, is ready to continue to cause a sensation wherever it is driven and enjoyed, just as the first off the line did in 1952.
