Car to be at auction 8/23
www.brightwells.com/timed-sale/5374/lot/645838

Auction description:
Registration: USY845
Engine Size 3000
Engine Number 29DRUH23698
Chassis Number HTB7L12909
Competition proven road/race car; built by vendor with Denis Welch; 2nd Class in VSCC POM this year; loads of competition success; ready to go with all necessary mods

Acquired by the vendor in 1993 as a swap for his Frogeye Sprite, the car had not long come in from the States, was basically sound and was immediately stripped to the bare bones in preparation for restoration and race-prep.

The intention was to build a Sprint/Hillclimb car and it was put to good use, also reaping numerous successes on the track, winning the Healey Championship in 2003.

The vendor converted the car to RHD during the restoration, fitting a heavy duty anti-roll bar up front with Rose joints, along with adjustable camber plates, competition shock absorbers and later BJ8 brake calipers with yellow pads.

At the rear, new springs have been added within the last five years and the axle has a limited slip diff supplied by Denis Welch, along with uprated halfshafts, anti-tramp bars and a high deflection propshaft. The brakes at the rear use Jaguar calipers and discs.

The engine was built with more input from DWR (Denis Welch Racing), including a Super Damper at the front, steel crank and I-beam rods, custom pistons and a DWR2 race cam - slightly on the wild side but still usable on the road. There are three Weber carbs which mate with a Peter Burgess ported head with uprated valve train. Deep groove pulleys stop the belts jumping about at high revs and there is a vernier timing gear and DWR roller chain tensioner.

Power is transmitted via a four-paddle 9 1/2" competition clutch. The flywheel is lightened and the engine has been fully balanced. The gearbox has a Sebring gear set (synchro now a bit worn on second) and a competition overdrive unit.

Inside is everything you need for competition, including a full roll cage, two DWR (non-dated) seats and a 40-litre alloy tank.

The chassis and bodywork are described by the vendor as in sound order, the car being principally used for competition purposes. It comes with a now rare original factory hard top which holds a significant value of its own. There are two sets of wheels with the car, one set of 72-spoke wires being relatively new and there are two unused Dunlop racing tyres ready to fit.

Last out at the VSCC Pomeroy Trophy this year where it was awarded a second class, it was racing at Anglesea last year - the fifty or so scrutineering tickets on the passenger door attest to a life well lived, with plenty more left in the tank for further enjoyment. A few years ago it had FIA papers which have now expired but it has been little changed since then.

Well-known in Healey circles and with a proven track record, this car looks excellent value and is only on offer to help fund another project.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
