Auction description:
This 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk I is a left-hand drive 2+2 example that was originally sold in California and underwent a restoration after it was acquired by the seller nine years ago. Finished in Ivory White and black over a black leather interior, the car is powered by a rebuilt 2.9-liter inline-six mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. Modifications include a camshaft ground to BJ8 specifications, a Mk III brake booster, an aluminum flywheel, aluminum sidepipes, vented aluminum fenders, and suspension upgrades. This BT7 is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage certificate, a new black soft top and tonneau cover, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
Originally finished in Ivory White, the body received a repaint in two-tone Ivory White and black in 2013 during the restoration. Panel repairs were carried out as needed prior to the paintwork, and the body was mated to a new frame. Period-correct works-style aluminum fenders with vents have been added up front. The paint was cut and buffed this year in preparation for the sale.
15” black-spoke wire wheels with knock-off hubs were added during the restoration and wear Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Suspension modifications include upgraded shocks along with a Dennis Welch Performance front sway bar, Stage 1 front springs, and rear leaf springs. A new black soft top was also fitted, and a new tonneau cover purchased.
The cabin features 2+2 seating and was reupholstered in black leather with white piping. Dynamat sound deadener was fitted under black carpets, and the matching dash sits behind a 3-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel. The steering wheel was aligned in January 2019, and a new stator tube was installed.
Smiths instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer and a 5-digit tachometer which shows just over 5k miles, reflecting the distance covered since the restoration was completed.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was rebuilt in 2010 by British Car Specialists of Stockon, California, with the cylinders bored, the block and head resurfaced, and the camshaft ground to BJ8 specifications. New main and rod crankshaft bearings were installed in addition to updated camshaft bearings, new valves, and hardened valve seats. Additional modifications include a lightweight aluminum flywheel, aluminum oil pan, and aluminum radiator, as well as aluminum side pipes. Service in 2019 included fluid changes, a tune-up, brake work, and new axle seals.
Shifting is through a 4-speed manual transmission which was also rebuilt during the restoration and features Laycock de Normanville overdrive. A new first-gear assembly was installed as well as a new hardened second-gear synchro, hardened synchro rings, bearings, and seals. The rear axle was also rebuilt, as were the suspension and brake systems. Additional underside photos are provided in the gallery below.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists the build date, original colors, and factory equipment.
