Lot #224173
This 1953 Austin-Healey 100 BN1 roadster was built in September 1953 for sale in the United States, and it was refurbished from 2016 to 2018 by a person who had purchased the car from the selling dealer. A Toyota-sourced five-speed manual transmission has been matched with 2.7-liter inline-four, and the vehicle has been repainted in green over green leather upholstery. The engine features Denis Welch Motorsport components such as a “fast road” aluminum cylinder head, a billet steel crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, a 100M-spec camshaft, a high-volume oil pump, and updated main seals. The engine also benefits from a negative-ground electrical system, a 55-amp alternator, a high-torque starter, a Mallory distributor, PerTronix electronic ignition, dual SU carburetors, a Wizard Cooling aluminum radiator, a “Texas” cooling fan, an auxiliary electric cooling fan, a lightened flywheel, an exhaust header, and a stainless-steel exhaust system. A trunk-mounted fuel cell is paired with a Facet electric fuel pump. Other equipment includes Minator 15” knock-off wheels, Healey 3000 front disc brakes, a 100M front anti-roll bar, stiffer shocks, a hydraulic clutch, a removable black convertible top, a tonneau cover, driving lights, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and lap belts. The selling dealer reacquired the roadster in November 2025. This 100 is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, a build summary, an owner’s handbook, a service manual, Austin-Healey–related literature, and a clean Pennsylvania title that cites the model year as 1955.
Finished from the factory in Healey Grey, the car was stripped to bare metal and resprayed in Spruce Green during the aforementioned refurbishment, according to the seller, who notes that the hood and the trunk lid are made of aluminum. The removable black soft top has been replaced. Exterior features include Lucas headlights, Lucas driving lights, a leather hood strap, fender-mounted side mirrors, an adjustable-rake windscreen, external trunk hinges, bright trim, chrome rear bumperettes, a single exhaust outlet, and a black tonneau cover. The seller points out that the color of the trunk lid does not exactly match the paint on the rest of the body, and the trunk panel’s alignment is imperfect.
Minator 15×5.5” splined knockoff alloy wheels are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires measuring 165HR15. The braking system has been updated with Austin-Healey 3000 front disc brakes to go along with rear drums as well as stainless-steel lines. A 100M-style 5/8″ front anti-roll bar is installed, and the lever shocks have been modified to be stiffer. The rear brake shoes and the rear-end hub seals and bearings were replaced in mid-2024.
The bucket seats were retrimmed in green leather sourced from AH Spares Ltd during the refurbishment. Interior appointments include a body-color metal dashboard, a passenger-side grab handle, a center armrest, lap belts, door-panel pockets, and black carpeting. A Saint Christopher medallion is affixed under the dashboard, and the shift knob also has a Saint Christopher theme.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 28k miles, approximately 50 of which were added by the selling dealer; the seller states that the odometer reading is not accurate, and true mileage is unknown.
A plastic fuel cell and a Facet electric fuel pump are housed in the trunk compartment.
The 2.7-liter inline-four was rebuilt during the refurbishment using parts sourced from Denis Welch Motorsport including:
“Fast road” ported and flowed aluminum cylinder head
Billet steel crankshaft
Crankshaft bearings
Front and rear lip main seals
Pistons and rings
Steel floating connecting rods
Pushrods w/bucket followers
100M-spec camshaft
Camshaft bearings
Timing chain, gears, and front cover
High-volume oil pump
High-volume water pump
Other equipment includes the following:
Dual SU carburetors
Negative-ground electrical system
55-amp alternator
Powerlite high-torque starter
Mallory distributor w/PerTronix electronic ignition
Wizard Cooling aluminum radiator
“Texas” cooling fan
Auxiliary electric “pusher” cooling fan
Front harmonic balancer
Lightened flywheel
Exhaust header
Stainless-steel exhaust system
Mercedes-Benz Achat Green engine paint
The engine tag is pictured above.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Toyota-sourced W58 five-speed manual transmission that is teamed with a hydraulic clutch system.
A six-page build summary of the refurbishment written by the previous owner is provided in the photo gallery below.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows factory equipment and indicates that the car was completed on September 23, 1953, in left-hand-drive North American Export specification and was dispatched to the United States.
