This 1954 Austin-Healey 100 BN1 roadster was purchased by its previous owner in 1974 and was the subject of a multi-decade refurbishment that involved replacing portions of the body and chassis, overhauling the brakes and suspension, and rebuilding the 2.7-liter inline-four. The car was twice repainted in black over nearly 50 years of continuous ownership, and the interior was retrimmed in red. The engine is backed by a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and additional equipment includes a red soft top and removable side curtains as well as a folding windshield, 15” knock-off wire wheels, Smiths instrumentation, and dual SU carburetors. Work performed since the selling dealer’s acquisition in mid-2023 has involved repairing the wiring and replacing the battery and the starter solenoid. This BN1 is now offered with refurbishment photos, handwritten notes, manufacturer’s literature, a workshop manual, newsletters, historic documents, and a clean Ohio title.

The body was removed from the chassis during the aforementioned refurbishment, and the rear clip, floors, and rocker panels were replaced along with portions of the support structure, doors, and fenders. Fiberglass was applied to the footwells and the trunk before a repaint in black. The car was repainted again in 2003. Exterior details include a folding windshield, a red soft top, removable red side curtains, and chrome bumpers with overriders.

Silver-finished 15” knock-off wire wheels wear two-eared spinners and are mounted with 165-series Michelin XZX tires showing 2001 production date codes. A matching spare is stored in the trunk along with a fire extinguisher. Braking is handled by four-wheel drums.

The cabin was retrimmed in red in the mid-2000s, and black floor mats protect the red carpeting. The selling dealer notes that the horn is inoperative and the turn-signal lever needs to be replaced.

The banjo-style steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 70k miles.

The 2.7-liter inline-four is equipped with dual SU carburetors. The car utilizes a positive-ground electrical system, and the battery and the starter solenoid were replaced in 2023 along with some of the wiring.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission with electrically actuated overdrive. Both units were reportedly rebuilt in 2009. Portions of chassis-box sections were cut out and replaced during the refurbishment, and seam sealer was applied before the frame was refinished in black.

A bound booklet with photos taken throughout the refurbishment process and descriptions of the work involved is shown in the gallery below and will accompany the car along with manufacturer’s literature, a workshop manual, and service records.

An identification plate on the chassis is—159535—is prepended with the characters BN1L in the VIN listed on the current Ohio title.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
