This 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was purchased four years ago by the seller, who proceeded to begin a refurbishment including a Kilmartin chassis kit, sheet metal repairs, a repaint in Dark British Racing Green, and interior work. The car retains its original 2.9-liter inline-six, which has been rebuilt and is mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. The seller has added approximately 350 break-in miles since the car was returned to drivable condition. Remaining work is said to include completing the interior, engine tuning, installation of the convertible top and windshield wipers, sorting the wiring, replacing the tires, and color-sanding the paint. This BJ8 is offered with a number of parts to complete the project, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean Washington State title in the seller’s name.
The exterior was refinished in 2-stage Dark British Racing Green following rust repair and replacement of the floors, sills, center tunnel, and lower shrouds. The hood, trunk, doors, and bulkheads were reportedly not replaced, with the bulkheads being sandblasted prior to reattachment to the chassis. The paint is said to need color-sanding and polishing.
The bumpers and trunk hinges are new, while the rest of the chrome is said to show imperfections. New 15″ Dayton 60-spoke wire wheels wear Dunlop tires, which should be replaced due to age. Photos taken during the refurbishment are included in the gallery below, including images of the chassis kit, unfinished repair panels, and the body on a rotisserie. A matching convertible frame, soft top, tonneau cover, and top cover are supplied but uninstalled. The unfinished frame was temporarily installed and the top cover draped over it for the photos above and some in the accompanying gallery.
The interior features Biscuit leather upholstery complemented by Palomino wool carpeting, all sourced from John Skinner Limited. The seat bottoms are said to be overly firm, the seller recommends refitting the backrest covers, and the parcel shelf is in need of assembly. The car is a Phase 1 BJ8, but the seller is including components in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 styles. The oil/water gauge was rebuilt by Nisonger Instruments, while the tachometer is said to be inoperable.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was bored .020″ over by Autosport Seattle and fitted with new pistons, bearings, lifters, valves, and hardened seats as well as resized rods and a reground camshaft. The SU carburetors were refurbished with new diaphragms and Teflon bushes, the intake manifold and generator were rebuilt, the radiator was re-cored, and a high-torque starter was installed. A new stainless steel exhaust system, wiring harness, and fuel tank were fitted. The distributor and carburetors require further attention according to the seller.
The 4-speed manual transmission was reportedly rebuilt with new shift forks, hardware, and seals as well as brass synchros and bearings. The electric overdrive unit and differential are also said to have been overhauled. Suspension work included fitment of new bushings, kingpins, and tie rod ends, and the steering box and idler were rebuilt. New brake parts include the hydraulics, calipers, hard and soft lines, and an aftermarket booster, and the system is said to require bleeding.
The BMIHT certificate reveals that this car was originally finished in Colorado Red with gray trim and a gray top. It was dispatched to the US in December 1964 equipped with wire wheels, a heater, an adjustable steering column, a laminated windshield, and a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The serial numbers on the engine and rear end match those on the certificate as shown in the photos below.
Included in the sale are parts invoices as well as a variety of spare parts such as a used brake booster and rebuild kit, a 60-spoke painted wire wheel
