Lot #119874
This 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was refurbished under previous ownership and is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six linked to a four-speed manual transmission with switch-activated overdrive. Refinished in green following rust remediation, the car is equipped with a black soft top and boot cover, 15″ wire-spoke wheels, front disc brakes, dual SU carburetors, black leather upholstery, wood veneer trim, and a heater. The car was acquired by the selling dealer in 2022, and subsequent work included replacing the tires and suspension, cooling, ignition, and engine components. This BJ8 is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment records, tools, and a clean Illinois title.
The car was refurbished in 1998 by Fourintune of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, which consisted of performing rust remediation and refinishing the exterior in green. Exterior details include a black soft top and matching boot cover, chrome bumpers and overriders, quarter vent windows, and dual exhaust outlets with polished finishers. The left-front fender was repainted in 2018.
Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels are secured to the hubs by two-eared knock-offs and were mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires in November 2022. A full-size spare is stowed in the trunk. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The rear leaf spring bushings, brake switch, and parking brake cable were replaced and the steering box was resealed in October 2022.
The 2+2 cockpit features front bucket seats and rear seat pads that were reupholstered in black leather during the refurbishment. Wood veneer trim accents the dashboard, and amenities include a heater, front lap belts, a wood shift knob, a locking glove compartment, and Austin-Healey-branded floor mats.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 80k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership. The flasher relay was replaced in October 2022, and the tachometer is inaccurate.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was factory rated at 148 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque and features dual SU carburetors with “pancake” air cleaners. Service in October 2022 included adjusting the valves, rebuilding the carburetors, and replacing the following parts:
Left-front motor mount
Valve cover gasket
Ignition points and condenser
Spark plugs
Wizard Cooling aluminum radiator and fan shroud
Six-blade cooling fan
Radiator hoses
Thermostat
A service record with the results of a compression test in October 2022 is included.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with switch-activated overdrive. The car is equipped with a silver-finished dual exhaust system. The clutch slave cylinder was replaced in October 2022.
A binder with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate and refurbishment invoices is included in the sale.
