For sale on e-bay: cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/
Up for auction, here on Ebay, for your consideration is a 1967 Austin Healey 3000 BJ-8 Sports Convertible. The BJ-8 is the most popular and easiest to drive of the Big Healeys, and offers lots of end-of-the-line final improvements, luxuries, and additions over the earlier models. It combines the best engine (150bhp), gearbox, and power brakes with an easy to operate fold-down soft-top, walnut-veneered dashboard, and most up to date interior and trim package. Please read further for an honest description of this car.
Offered by Kurt Tanner Restorations, this vehicle is being sold on behalf of it's owner. It is a good driver quality car that has recently benefitted from some work, and has been test driven by myself about 10 miles to ensure an accurate mechanical description. Recent work appears to include carburetors overhauled and recent front brake caliper pair rebuild. The engine starts on the button and runs very well. The oil is very clean, and the coolant level is correct and the right color. Oil pressure is excellent at 55-60 psi driving and at least 20-25 psi at hot idle. There are no engine noises and the exhaust burns cleanly. It revs well and has all the symptoms of a healthy engine. The gearbox, likewise, shifts well with no issues into all gears and is even quiet in first gear. The rear axle is fine. The steering box has some straight ahead play in it, but may adjust up. The car is in need of some shock absorbers. The clutch pedal is on the heavy side, which may indicate a heavy-duty diaphragm clutch cover. The brakes pull up okay with very good pedal pressure. The car is fitted with an excellent, newer set 4 of earlier style 48-spoke chrome wire wheels, shod with Pirelli P3's 165X15 tires with very decent tread on them. The front end has some shimmy at 50-60 MPH, which may indicate a need for some re-balancing. There is a very robust and strong exhaust note. Overall, this car mechanically has good bones, and no immediate attention is needed to enjoy driving it.
This car has a shiny and attractive driver-quality paintjob that looks to be recent. The car looks excellent from 10 feet, but close inspection shows some poor prepwork under the surface. Panel fit overall is okay. The hood fit is a little tight on the left side, and there are a few chips that need touching up around the hood opening. Bodywork overall is good, and definitely decent enough for this good driver. Most chrome and rubber appears to be original, and looks average with the rest of the car. The windshield glass has been replaced with a new one at some time, but is starting to delaminate in the corners. The black trim is mostly original with both door panels recently recovered in black vinyl. The replaced carpets are acceptable, but a little tatty around the edges. The interior could use some detailing overall, but is definitely decent and useable. The softop is nice and decently fitted to the car, with only a very small tear on the right hand front edge. Everything works electrically except the overdrive switch, flashers and temperature gauge. The dashboard wood has been replaced at some time recently and is in very good condition. The car is fitted with a very rare and desirable period- correct Les Leston (LL) alloy and wood steering wheel, which would be an attractive addition with some cosmetic attention.
Structurally, the undercarriage on this car is quite good with solid outriggers, inner and outer rockers, and a nice straight chassis. Documents with the car showed that part of it's life was spent in Texas. The front of both floor pans have been repaired with a riveted patch panel. There is a minimal rust hole on the trunk floor on the left side. A small hole has worn through the bottom of the roadster- style exhaust system. Overall this car appears to be very solid.
This car is a very attractive, decent driver-quality example that could benefit from some further work and cosmetic improvements. It is a reasonable road car to use currently in it's as-is, good condition, and improve later. Please ask all questions before bidding. Please call me at 909-241-1051 (cell). This car is available for viewing by appointment in Southern California in the city of Upland, near Ontario Airport. The title for the car is clear. Good Luck Bidding and thank you for your interest.
